Wiki has a list of 21 writers and former writers that have made that show great. Where Colbert succeeds is in his deadpan delivery.

he was actually the commencement speaker at my old college a few years ago, and sent her the you tube clip. Needless to say ,hysterically funny.
And yes, he and Stewart are national treasures.
