(16,423 posts)The NASA is currently trying to build a device that would cause space-time-disturbances similar to the warp-drive proposed by Alcubierre, but so far they haven't been able to filter out the noise (micro-earthquakes) from their measurements. The experiment was moved to a new site and currently set up anew.
And Alcubierre's warp-drive would be a bad idea anyway: Would need an amount of energy roughly equal to one ton of matter-antimatter-reaction and would double as an interstellar weapon of mass-destruction.
Major improvements need to be done in that field, to find a better warp-field-formula and to find a better warp-drive-architecture, but you can't "mandate" that a discovery is supposed to happen before an arbitrary date.

(26,355 posts)IIRC, the Alcubierre drive required matter with negative mass in order to work. That stuff's a wee bit hard to come by...
