Man Dies After Police Tase Him; Family Puzzled
May 27, 2013 6:38 PM

FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - Relatives of a man who was killed after police entered his home and tased him are struggling to come to terms with how he died.

"They physically pulled him off the couch because, like I said, he was asleep. They pulled him off the couch and they tried to put him on his stomach. He can’t breathe on his stomach. He don’t even lie on the bed on his stomach," said Donna Randle, the mother of victim Jarmaine Darden, 34.

Zero tolerance officers were executing a search warrant at his southeast Fort Worth house on May 16, searching for cocaine, when according to police reports the incident happened. The same report states that Darden resisted arrest.

But family members said the 350 pound father of two was a chronic asthmatic and had to sleep sitting up. "He had his hands behind his back the whole time. But me and about five other people were hollering the whole time, ‘He cannot breathe like that. Please handcuff him on his side,’" said Randle.

Darden’s brother said the officer warned his brother that if he didn’t get on his stomach, they were going to to taze him… and then they did. That’s when Darden started having trouble breathing, according to his brother Eric.

Witnesses said Darden was shocked with a taser at least twice; then stopped breathing and died.

Police records show five arrests were made but there isn’t any mention of police finding cocaine.

"Zero tolerance" police executing a cocaine search warrant, but there wasn't any cocaine.

Fat, asthmatic guy tasered to death. For nothing. Nice.

If this kind of murderous shit keeps happening, cities are going to start exploding in riots.

We need a national commission on law enforcement abuses and police practices.

.... in a dark way. "Man Dies After Police Tase Him; Family Puzzled"
The guy dies and they are puzzled? I can think of a lot of other things I would be, but puzzled isn't at the top of my list.
Pissed, infuriated, ready to sue etc...

I just read the title of the article without reading the article.

Am I right?

I've noticed a callous disregard for the lives of African Americans in this country.

America doesn't have the authority to lecture anybody on human rights.

Clearly they have zero tolerance for sleeping on the couch, being Black, and obesity, but good lord, that is one Orwellian term right there.

ETA: I think I am developing zero tolerance for law enforcement.

The police will even tase them make them jump.

In another situation invoving an asthmatic, the police gave nine 50,000-volt jolts to an asthmatic. Many of them while he was handcuffed and two after he was already unconscious.

"According to the 1/17/08 issue of the Chicago Tribune, Nugent claimed to have administered the first of nine Taser jolts into the middle of the victim's back. Nugent allegedly continued to Taser the man after he fell down and refused to get back up.

"Eyewitnesses who were at the grocery store at the time reportedly told Pikes' family that the man had pleaded with the police officer, "Please, you all got me. Please don't Tase me again."
...
"In June of 2008, five months after Pikes' death, Williams ruled the man's death a homicide, following consultations with the nationally prominent forensic pathologist Dr. Michael Baden, who told the Chicago Tribune that the Taser death case "could be considered to be torture."

"Williams, a veteran coroner with 33 years' experience in Winn Parish, said, "This case may be the most unnecessary death I have ever had to investigate. [Pikes] put up no fuss, no fighting, no physical aggression. The Taser was not used to take him into custody. He just didn't respond quickly enough to the officer's commands."
