I love President Obama.
The man has moved this country forwarded in a way that will only be acknowledged by historians. He took over with an economy that sinking, a country at war, and a culture that looked on the verge of going backwards.
On the economy, he has followed practical politics that limited the recession. He passed a Health Care Bill that expands coverage and will limit insane medical inflation that would have destroyed the economy. He passed a stimulus that stopped unemployment from reaching above 11 percent ( http://content.usatoday.com/communities/onpolitics/post/2010/02/cbo-unemployment-would-have-topped-11-without-stimulus/1 ) . He passed Dodd-Frank which begins to regulate dangerous trading and banking practices. He has practically given us policies that have helped us dig out of the economic gloom that he inherited .
He has taken our country out of Iraq and has followed sane policies in Afghanistan. He is beginning to restructure US defense policy to meet the future security environment, deal with threats to this country, and do so in a way this country can afford.
He has ended Don't Ask, Don't Tell, one of the biggest civil rights achievements in a generation. He has highlighted issues, such as contraception, and will use it to continue to fight for progressive policies. In a debate and a contract with Rick Santorum, I think that President Obama clearly represents the future of this country.
I love the President. I see many threads that call him "center-right" etc. He is not an "Eisenhower" Republican. He is a modern Democratic President and has done a great job in leading the government over the past 3 years. We should be thankful for what we have and understand that it isn't the 1950s (Eisenhower didn't really do much to stop what was going in the South, FYI) nor is it the 1930s. The policies that he has followed are politically possible in 2012 and are also good policies in 2012. The policies of 1930s or the 1950s will not work in 2012. We are living in a different World now and one should not keep their thinking static concerning what policies are good or bad. Much of what he has done would have been unthinkable for Americans during either the 1930s or 1950s and are huge moves forwarded.
I love the President, and I think DUers should also fully support him. He has accomplished a lot and I trust him to continue to lead the nation after 2012.

(6,161 posts)And has handled it well and with an open mind. Thankfully, America made the right choice by not electing the Ghost and Mrs. Stupid.

(2,384 posts)But he ACTUALLY got a really shitting position when he started and he has done some pretty major things while in office.

(15,438 posts)Sometimes even Democrats - of all stripes from liberal to moderate - need to be reminded how unique this president is, and how effective he has been, and how much he's done even when very few media report on it.
Just like you, I believe he's going to be a tougher president in his second term.

(2,384 posts)mind-blowing.

(37,648 posts)considering all that he's had to deal with. It boggles the mind, what he's had to deal with. He didn't do some things I wanted, didn't go far enough in other areas, and did some things I totally disagree with. But that would be the case with any President.
Thanks for posting the type of post that is getting increasingly rare in this Democratic forum.

(2,915 posts)I think he came in with the idea that he would be able to work with the Republicans and has slowly learned that this just is not possible as they've become increasingly extreme and obstructionist. The first term of a Presidency is always about balancing the need for re-election with getting your party's agenda accomplished. He's done about as well as he could have considering the situation he walked into, but I sense many here would feel better if he had fought harder and compromised less earlier on.

(1,625 posts)I see him more as a maintainer of the status quo.
The apparent improvement in the economy has been modest and has come at a big price -- the lowering of interest rates that have inevitably created asset bubbles, and the creation of a federal debt that will be highly destructive. Even then, real unemployment underemployment remain above 15%. There are signs that our economic system is fundamentally flawed. At a minimunm, we need a president who is willing to acknowledge the flaws, try to determine the extent and causes, and be willing to develop and put forth solutions. But Obama has relied on the old solutions and goes on with business as usual. He keeps talking about bringing jobs back from overseas, but does nothing substantive to accomplish it. He knows the political system is corrupt, but does nothing about it --except exploit the corruption.
His foreign policy is based on using increasing military force to gain political and economic advantage and propping up the military-industrial complex.
To me, that's not progress. It's simply keeping us on the wrong path.

(17,266 posts)Is how so many things that he does PISS OFF the Obama-haters, but then it turns out he had a progressive objective anyhow and they lose one more thing to gripe about.

(16,646 posts)And then ya threw this in:
It doesn't limit insane medical inflation. In fact, it did little to moderate it at all. It is still predicted by the White House to continue to go up at 7% per year for the foreseeable future. It reduced the rate of increase in costs to the federal government, mostly through modifications of Medicaid. It did limit the profit margins of the insurance companies, but not the gross profits. Health care costs are still a significant long term economic threat to this country. Even the White House will admit that.

(27,461 posts)center-right doesn't mean "bad". If Obama follows center-right policies and they work, that would be fabulous. It would make him a successful center-right president, and you can still love him.

(39,909 posts)and that includes the critters who depend on me,
but "love" a politician?
"Love" means permanent, unthinking, unconditional acceptance and support, no matter what.
My support for politicians depends very much on whether they fight for my issues and values, and how strongly,
and can be given or withdrawn based on their performance.
As a Mainstream, Center FDR/LBJ Democrat,
I find little to approve of in this President's performance and "Centrist" values,
and support him accordingly.
That he is better than the current Republicans is without doubt,
and that may be a good basis for a vote,
but THAT is no basis for "LOVE".
"Love" a politician?
..that way there be monsters.

(2,384 posts)But for right now, he is moving the country forward during a difficult time. Who couldn't love that.

(11,464 posts)great thread (except for the haters posting against it.)
President Obama has already (and will be seen, by the end of his second term), to be one of the Top 3 presidents ever, possibly #2 after Lincoln.
Already he has done more good things than most of the other 43(actually 42 as one always counts twice) combined.
And he ropes the dopes time and again. (Like he just did again with birth control.)
Haters don't even know what hits them. And yup, they are fighting like its still the 1980s.
Dems gotta win back the house, hold the senate, and retake SCOTUS during Obama's second term, and a Dem has to win in 2016 and 2020 to secure it.
