UBUNTU

Last edited Thu Jun 20, 2013, 01:42 PM - Edit history (1)

An anthropologist proposed a game to the kids in an African tribe. He put a basket full of fruit near a tree and told the kids that who ever got there first won the sweet fruits. When he told them to run they all took each other's hands and ran together, then sat together enjoying their treats. When he asked them why they had run like that as one could have had all the fruits for himself they said: "UBUNTU, how can one of us be happy if all the other ones are sad?"

'UBUNTU' in the Xhosa culture means: "I am because we are"

it was the last microsoft OS I used
I started with DOS 3.1. Stayed away from windows 3 and 95 other than checking them out. Had to go with 98 in order to get online or I'd never gave it a try. I played with Ubuntu from day one and I have to admit it took me a while to warm up to it but after I finally did there was no looking back. I think the first version of Ubuntu that I installed on my computer was 8.04, shortly after that 9.04 came out. I'm using 10.04.4 now and realize I have to upgrade at some point but I just can't warm up to Unity so I'm holding off until they get Mate squared away. Last time I tried Mate 1.6 it was pretty close to gnome2, which I really like best of all. In all I've probably had 50 or more installs of Linux on this hard drive looking for that perfect one to replace 10.04 with. So far no luck.
I downloaded OpenBSD 5.3 but haven't tried it yet. I will though.

U- is the abstract noun class, and "buntu" is the stem for "human". (The Bantu language family is named after that cognate they all share.)

They make their way to the ruling class of the civilization, then they make other people suffer in order to have their opulence, and then they propagandize their values and force others to be unethical and corrupt if they want to have a "good life." If most people cheat, how can you stand a chance in a game that if you don't cheat, you lose? Aggressive unethical people rig the game to favor their kind of people, and everyone else loses unless they become like them.

Some psychologist devised a game where you had to cooperate in order to win.

And they gave the game to some American kids and some Mexican kids....in the American kids they never won a single prize because they were always competing....with the Mexican kid thy caught on quickly and would take turns winning and getting the rewards.

It wasn't just their slogan. They lived by it. Of course, the GM eventually traded one of their core players (Perkins) and it ultimately killed "UBUNTU" forever in that Celtics team. You could see it rip their hearts out essentially. Sad, but a great run in 2008.

“Africans have a thing called ubuntu. It is about the essence of being human, it is part of the gift that Africa will give the world. It embraces hospitality, caring about others, being willing to go the extra mile for the sake of another. We believe that a person is a person through other persons, that my humanity is caught up, bound up, inextricably, with yours. When I dehumanize you, I inexorably dehumanize myself. The solitary human being is a contradiction in terms. Therefore you seek to work for the common good because your humanity comes into its own in community, in belonging.” -- Archbishop Desmond Tutu

send me to a source (a dubious one at that--that's a web site not much better than a link farm), as if to prove it true? If your OP had called it a parable, I would have not questioned it.

So much trouble is caused by urban myths, hoaxes, and other gossip, so often used to stir up right wing anger. I wish people trying to support good things would not sink to using those techniques.

Again, that was an awesome photo, so thanks for that. And a nice parable, if presented as such.
