Fox Pundit Says Women In The Military Should ‘Expect’ To Be Raped

Source: Think Progress

The Pentagon announced new rules last week easing the ban on women serving in combat. While conservatives like Rick Santorum are a little uneasy with the news, the announcement only formalizes military practices that were already taking place.

But Fox News contributor Liz Trotta’s commentary on the matter took the issue to a whole other level. She’s not really concerned about the “controversy” surrounding the Pentagon’s announcement. For Trotta, the issue is having “women once more, the feminist, going, wanting to be warriors and victims at the same time.” She cited a recent Pentagon report that violent sex crimes in the military have increased over the last 6 years and said women should “expect” it, decrying more levels of bureaucracy to support women who have been “raped too much“:

TROTTA: But while all of this is going on, just a few weeks ago, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta commented on a new Pentagon report on sexual abuse in the military. I think they have actually discovered there is a difference between men and women. And the sexual abuse report says that there has been, since 2006, a 64% increase in violent sexual assaults. Now, what did they expect? These people are in close contact, the whole airing of this issue has never been done by Congress, it’s strictly been a question of pressure from the feminist.

And the feminists have also directed them, really, to spend a lot of money. They have sexual counselors all over the place, victims’ advocates, sexual response coordinators. … So, you have this whole bureaucracy upon bureaucracy being built up with all kinds of levels of people to support women in the military who are now being raped too much.

I feel a freaking rant coming on...

Santorum said last week women shouldn't serve in combat because they're too emotional, or some such b/s.

I actually interpreted what he said differently. It sounded to me like he was alleging that women serving beside men was too much temptation for sexual activity. I could be wrong. But usually, I'm not, LOL.

Perhaps moreso because that ghastly nonsense fell out of a woman's mouth.

The French Resistance dragged collaborators into the streets and shaved their heads. I don't think that's the way to deal with anti-woman women, but damned if the thought doesn't make me smile.

Well, now.

Exactly what is "feminist" about not wanting to get "raped too much" or how about "not at all"? Do we value the lives of women so little that we don't even care about the ones that volunteered to serve our country?

Is she saying that she doesn't support our troops unless they are male and straight? And that it's expected for our male, straight troops to not have any discipline or the ability to control themselves? Because that's exactly what it sounds like to me. Some "patriotic" woman this is.

I honestly hope that we never get into a situation where our nation is invaded and those women who were "raped too much" have to defend her from getting "raped too much" or killed. You just can't help ignorance like that, and any person that would agree with her - that it's too much money to spend on our troops because they should have expected to get raped (and our soldiers should feel justified in raping) - fundamentally lacks humanity to the point where they are empty inside.

Any person that would interview her and not denounce her for making such a horrible, demeaning and disgusting remark about our troops is just as awful as she is.

"Radical Feminism" is expecting to not be raped while doing your job. I wonder if Liz would be okay if she was raped at her job? I mean, it's such radical feminism to expect not to be raped. I guess it's radical too to expect that children don't get raped by teachers, coaches, and ministers, etc. because they are in close quarters with them.

I mean, how DARE women take their vaginas out in public and expect anything less?

After all, men simply can't control themselves, so can't be asked, expected, disciplined, begged, coerced, or otherwise made to leave them alone.

Edited to add: The military could do a great deal to curb sexual assaults if they'd outlaw misogynist language during basic training and anywhere else it occurs, but esp. during basic -- calling slow or poorly performing troops popular anti-woman gender slurs, for example.

I work in a company with about 60 men and 6 women. It is an engineering firm. I'm pretty sure this Fox news idiot wouldn't say that I should expect to be raped. Many women are police officers, firefighters, pilots, construction workers and engineers. I have never heard anyone say that they should expect to be raped because they work in close proximity to a lot of men. I can't believe that this woman exists. She is too stupid.

Second of all, is she bitching about "moar big gubmint" in the middle of a hateful rant that would be disgusting in ANY era of history? Ah, there we see the usual. RW pile of trash wraps complaint about "moar big gubmint" in a social issue and expects to get away with it. A good link here: http://www.alternet.org/world/31584/

What I think Trotta wants us to believe is that it is the fault of feminists that this happens. Because, ya know, some women (feminist identifiers or not) want to serve their country, but just can't handle the the repercussions. And, naturally, rape is something that could possibly be expected in those close quarters. Besides, it costs the US a bundle to set up networks in order to counsel victims of sexual assault. These VICTIMS are costing us money!

Here is a thought, spend an equal amount of money to prevent such assaults. And when they do happen, make the repercussions severe. Extremely severe.
