A masked man with a machete broke into the home around 10 p.m., took about $1,000 in cash and left, a Supreme Court spokeswoman said, according to the Associated Press. Breyer, 73, his wife, Joanna, and two friends were not harmed.
It is not known whether security officers accompanied Breyer to Nevis, the Washington Post reported. No arrests had been made as of today, CNN reported.
According to the AP, the last Supreme Court Justice to be the victim of a crime was David Souter, who suffered minor injuries when he was assaulted in 2004 by a group of young men while jogging alone in a city street. Before that, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg had her purse snatched in 1996 while walking with her husband and daughter near their home in Washington, DC....

(135,425 posts)This happened five days ago, but we're only hearing about it now--I guess they didn't want the perp to go to ground too easily. Unfortunately, he was masked, but the local cops are getting plenty of help:
FBI agents and the U.S. Marshals Service are involved in the probe of the incident. We are assisting the local police in their investigation, FBI spokesman Paul Bresson said.
The St. Kitts-Nevis Observer said local law enforcement had been notified when the Breyers arrived in Nevis, as is customary, but it was not clear whether there was security with the justice. There has not been an arrest. Breyer has left the island.

(34,179 posts)On no, a member of the one percent was robbed of $1000(probably ten thousandth of one percent of his wealth) in his own vacation home in a foreign country. Meh, let the cops and insurance company take care of it. Hopefully that thief will get away with his crime, he probably has enough money to feed and clothe his family for a year.
Meanwhile, cops don't show up in a lot of places in the inner city, even if you're robbed of a couple thousand dollars.

People don't like their vacation spots to be perceived as hotbeds of crime.

(135,425 posts)I don't care how rich or poor they might be.
So he has a "vacation home" in a "foreign country?" Why should that matter?
People who live in that "foreign country" built that home. They maintain it, too, and they don't do this for free. The taxes on that home pay for the schools and roads of that "foreign country" and the owner doesn't use up a lot of services from that country, either.
I think the premise of your post is asinine in the extreme. More likely, the masked thief has enough money to buy drugs for a week, not feed his nonexistent family for a year.
This robbery costs all of us money--US law enforcement in the form of FBI and other agencies are assisting the local police with their inquiries. We pay for that.
If you have a problem with cops not showing up in the inner city, take it up with the mayors concerned. One situation has absolutely nothing to do with the other.

Something tells me you would have a different attitude if somebody broke into your home wielding a machete.
