(972 posts)or look at the many ways that the oil companies are subsidized by the government or the costs of shipping the oil from Canada to Texas to China. Every dollar spent on such folly is a dollar that could be spent on sustainable energy.

(19,497 posts)If straight environmental damage were the issue electric cars would be outlawed overnight. As much as I support electric cars that is one industry that has been cut a lot of slack out of political favoritism.

(38,310 posts)The world would be much better off if they turned all the natural gas they use cooking this tar, and all the coal used building and maintaining those giant machines, directly into gasoline.
It's like ethanol from corn. If the amount of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere and other environmental damages were accounted for, this industry wouldn't be considered profitable. This is one of those businesses where small numbers of people profit at everyone else's much greater expense.
