My mom's side of the family is as deep blue as you can get. But the relatives old enough say that George Romney did a good job as Governor of Michigan. To this day, it's hard to find anyone who will say anything negative against George. But the good name never extended beyond that. Willard's brother, Scott failed to get the Republican nomination in 1994 and daughter-in-law Ronna lost badly to Carl Levin in 1996. so while Willard may win the Michigan primary, don't expect his family name to mean much in November.

(25,183 posts)At the time he was governor of Michigan, I was a teenager in next-door Indiana, and I don't remember anything about him. And I had a fairly great political awareness at a young age, my parents taught me to sing along with that "Kennedy" commerical that you can easily find on YouTube, when I was five.

(10,237 posts)...I remember him vaguely. Where I mostly remember him is from my father discussing his presidential campaign never getting off the ground in 1968. I don't remember why.
My father is a son of a bitch, a lifelong Democrat and he could have lived with George Romney or Nelson Rockefeller as republican presidents. His feelings for tricky dickie made my feeling about george w moron look like mild annoyance.
BTW, A big to me because this should have been an answer to response #1. Sorry.
PEACE!

(15,318 posts)Incumbent Philip Hart won 66.8%, over two-thirds of the vote. Lenore Romney won only 32.9%.
Lenore was the First Lady of Michigan, and ran less than two years after George Romney resigned to be HUD Secretary.
These days, you're going to find a lot of people in Michigan who simply don't remember George Romney.
