(Reuters) - Catholic bishops, energized by a battle over contraception funding, are planning an aggressive campaign to rally Americans against a long list of government measures which they say intrude on religious liberty.
The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops plans to work with other religious groups, including evangelical Christians, on an election-year public relations campaign that may include TV and radio ads, social media marketing and a push for pastors and priests to raise the subject from the pulpit.
So, for instance, a pizzeria owner who objected to childhood vaccinations on religious grounds would be able to request an insurance plan that did not cover them, in effect overriding a federal requirement that vaccinations be provided free with any health-insurance plan.

What about child molesting priests and the church who protects them??

(36,286 posts)It must be traditional with Catholic bishops to be total asses about government mandated programs that protect people from depending on charity. They shot down the Mother and Child welfare scheme in Ireland in the 50's that would have provided free maternity care and free medical care for children up to age 16. Their excuse then? It would have interfered with a father's right to be the sole breadwinner!

(12,530 posts)My stock answer to any American Catholic leadership is: fuck your request, you piece of garbage. You have child rape charges you've been trying to hide in systematic fashion for years and years, and you'll need to answer those charges in full measure before you're permitted to attempt to destroy another segment of our society.

(4,742 posts)I spent 18 years going to Catholic Church...CCD Classes, confirmation, first communion, etc. I vividly remember in about 8th grade sitting in the church listening to this pasty white, high-pitched voice, fruitcake yelling at us that if we touch ourselves in "naughty ways" we'll burn in hell. This was in 1988...not 1888.
I remember going into the confessional and telling some old fuck with a collar how I boinked off 32 times in the last two weeks while looking at my dad's Playboys. I said a few dozen Hail Marys and Our Fathers and VOILA! All was good. Then back to more boinking off.
Seriously, the Catholic Church is becoming more and more irrelevant. I'm now attend a First United Methodist Church which spends about 80% of their income on missions stuff helping hungry people, clothing people, aiding in foreign tragic situations, etc.

(4,742 posts)Interestingly I am an organist. I play mostly as a substitute. I do it because I love the organ and not because I'm dedictaed to the church stuff.
However I do attend, on a fairly regular basis, a First United Methodist Church. I'm impressed how laid-back and dedicated these people are to community service, helping the less fortunate, etc. I've never once heard anything remotely political from the pulpit and frankly the messages seem to be very liberal in nature. They welcome all people from all backgrounds. So in some cases they aren't all bad. But so many are.
