Birth control has come full circle politically. It was birth control that gave us

Protestant New England Republicans. The Democratic party of the day couldn't cut it's Irish and Italian base who had yet to become cafateria Catholics.

Republicans took up this issue when BC was not as widely practiced because of religion etc. The Bushes (Poppy & Babs) were PP supporters (so were Mitt and his wife, actually.)

In the 50s - 70s BC was a GOP supported thing, after the Nixon debacle they went looking for wedge issues and this sort of went along with "the southern strategy" when the parties realigned. Sort of like in the 1950s the GOP would be more into civil rights but when the Dems passed the legislation the GOP courted all the racist EX Dems, which is why they are the way they are now.
