Greg Kaufmann on the Truth About American Poverty
June 28, 2013
Greg Kaufmann, poverty correspondent for The Nation, says the poor in America are stereotyped and demonized in an effort to justify huge cuts in food stamps and other crucial programs for low-income Americans.
People are working and theyre not getting paid enough to feed their families, pay their utilities, pay for their housing, pay for the healthcare if youre not paying people enough to pay for the basics, theyre going to need help getting food, Kaufmann tells Bill. There are a lot of corporations that want to be involved in the fight against hunger. The best thing they can do is get on board for fair wages.

(44,130 posts)That would mean the corps. really are sincere in their pledge to fight against hunger, which they clearly are not.

Under paying means you are taking away food, clothing, utilities, and the means for one to prepare a decent life and future. And an honest day's work should be able to provide for all that. Paying any less and you're no better than a common thief. And then turning around and complaining about government assistance programs is the ultimate hypocrisy because lousy wages only increase the necessity of welfare programs.

(17,000 posts)hunger? Is he talking about agribusiness for profit? I agree that the best thing these corporations can do is pay a living wage (to fight hunger) but good luck with that. And I think most corporations are not interested in the subject at all.

(1,295 posts)Break up the unions so workers CAN'T ask for more.
Prioritize shareholders over workers.
Get more out of the work force for less.
Let the other guy (i.e. the government they so hate) pay for what we don't.
But don't ask us to pay the taxes we owe to do it.
This is one completely messed up country.

(3,414 posts)Absolutely! The sociopaths have taken over and are now running the asylum. They don't want to "help" us, they want us dead, the sooner the better. No money for healthcare, no money for healthy food, paid a bare subsistance for your labor, the ultimate source of weath.... I can come to no other conclusion, especially for those over 50. We apparently have contributed to this society the max with our minds and our backs, and now the 1%ers just want us gone. And the younger people have fared no better, with the lack of quality jobs and the unholy burden of student loans. But I have no real answers, so far....
Edited to add:
I just realized something. What is the opposite of sociopathy?
Answer: socialism.

Not enough attention is paid to the under paid, the under employed. Couples who had middle class jobs and a middle class life, by the droves, are really struggling. But hey, as long as one of the Koch brother doesn't have to get by on 1.6 billion rather than 1.9 billion I guess it's worth it....not!
