A great broadside from A. Sullivan

I know he has his admirers and detractors here. I tend to disagree with him often but do find him to be thoughtful. This, however, is a classic:

"If you really oppose abortion, you should back contraception, especially for those women least likely to afford it outside health insurance plans. But the new rigid fundamentalism of the John Paul II and Benedict XVI hierarchy cannot allow such moral trade-offs. But trading off the rape of children for the reputation of the church? Suddenly they get pragmatic.

I'm sorry but I find the protectors of child rapists preaching to women about contraception to be a moral obscenity. When all the implicated bishops and the Pope resign, ther replacements will have standing to preach."

You hate, hate, hate the deficit and mourn the burden your children will be saddled with, yet you just can't let the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy expire...

people might lose all respect for its teaching authority!

Believe it or not, a Papal commission came to the conclusion that artificial* contraception is acceptable to Church teachings; this after Paul VI went back to the original commission and loaded it up with conservative cardinals!
The actual reason for current teachings is exactly as given above!

*as opposed to natural contraception?

This is another reason to visit The Daily Beast for his essays, and it seems we're witnessing a sea change in moderates as they find themselves totally repulsed by the Republican candidates and their extreme views. We had to see it coming.

The Bishops and Cardinals need to "stfu". They have no right to preach considering what they have done.
