SANTORUM: One of the things I will talk about that no president has talked about before is I think the dangers of contraception in this country, the whole sexual libertine idea... It's not okay because it's a license to do things in the sexual realm that is counter to how things are supposed to be. They're supposed to be within marriage, for purposes that are, yes, conjugal... but also procreative.
That's the perfect way that a sexual union should happen. We take any part of that out, we diminish the act. And if you can take one part out that's not for purposes of procreation, that's not one of the reasons, then you diminish this very special bond between men and women, so why can't you take other parts of that out? And all of a sudden, it becomes deconstructed to the point where it's simply pleasure. And that's certainly a part of it--and it's an important part of it, don't get me wrong--but there's a lot of things we do for pleasure, and this is special, and it needs to be seen as special. Again, I know most presidents don't talk about those things, and maybe people don't want us to talk about those things, but I think it's important that you are who you are. I'm not running for preacher.
...........
Ponder the implicit claim he is making: that it is desirable for the President of the United States to opine on and shape public policy according to his notion of what is "special." As he surely knows, what is "special," what ought to be kept "special," and what is required to keep sex "special" are all deeply contested matters. They inevitably turn on judgments shaped by faith, moral reasoning, and intuition. The American people, having wrestled with these questions, have concluded in overwhelming numbers either that contraception doesn't make sex less special - or that if it does make sex less special, the tradeoff (less special sex in return for fewer unwanted pregnancies or abortions or STDs or more pleasure or human connection) is worthwhile.
Any politician who regards the adult use of contraceptives as a matter under his purview cannot lay claim to the limited government label, nor can he credibly invoke a tradition rooted in the pursuit of happiness. And it's baffling that a presidential candidate would survey a world of poets, clergy, cognitive neuro-scientists, novelists, happily married elderly people, and a polity with sexual tastes as diverse of ours, and regard politicians as a useful authority on what kind of sex is special.

(61,539 posts)Thousands of years of religious wars remind us why this is a bad idea.
If Rick Santorum thinks he gets to decide "how things are supposed to be" then everybody else gets to decide, too, and pretty soon we'll have a big war between whichever religions are vying for control.

Santorum needs therapy. NOT a leadership role.

(15,953 posts)The sexual revolution is 50 years old for crying out loud! Jeez, live in the past much? I suppose I shouldn't be surprised. We've been rehashing the New Deal for the last decade or two and that's almost 80 years old. Talk about not being able to deal with change.
And what is this guy's obsession with other people's sex lives? Aren't Republican's the ones always complaining about the nanny state? He says he's not running for preacher but he sure is preachy.

(904 posts)I suppose because I am no longer of child bearing age and procreation is not a possibility, my husband and I should no longer engage in as he puts it "recreational" sex.

(4,788 posts)and worse, my husband had a vasectomy during his first marriage, so even when I was of childbearing age, none of our, um, "acts" could produce a child. We had to adopt our little girl in order to have a family. I guess I'd better tell my husband that we can't, ah, be intimate anymore if Santorum becomes president (you know, I think I feel a bit sick to my stomach just typing those words).

(16,207 posts)It seems we already have the answer to the question: The Santorums don't have sex. They haven't had it for quite some time now, if menopausal symptoms started before Mrs. Santorum turned 50.
We have identified his problem. He believes sex for pleasure is sinful and wrong. I'm willing to bet there's an even bigger problem, namely the fact he has desires he can't act upon.
Let's hope there's a journalist somewhere with a strong stomach, and the will to discover and print the truth.

(21,925 posts)Wasting sperm is a sin. The thing is, sperm is constantly being made by the body, 24 hours a day and then lost. So I hope Rick and his wife realize that and engage in 24 hour a day non-stop intercourse wherever they go, permanently coupled to each other and seeking non-stop ejaculations. Otherwise, Ricky is sinfully wasting sperm.

(36,693 posts)How do you feel about your wife living with a guy for many years, having sex with him, without the benefit of marriage??
Did she use birth control during this time??
Did you and your wife have sex before marriage??
Have you and your wife ever use birth control??
These are fair questions because Rick brought them up for everyone else..........
