http://religion.blogs.cnn.com/2012/02/15/liberal-catholics-challenge-bishops-on-contraception/Americas Catholic bishops have criticized the White Houses mandate for insurers to provide free contraception coverage to employees, but plenty of other Catholic groups have endorsed the plan some taking swipes at the bishops in the process.
The Catholic bishops and their allies in the Republican Party are increasingly isolated, James Salt, executive director of a liberal group called Catholics United, said in a statement over the weekend supporting the White Houses contraception rule.
The bishops blanket opposition appears to the serve the interests of a political agenda, not the needs of the American people," Salt continued, e-mailing his groups support for the White House to tens of thousands of Catholics nationwide.
Another Washington-based Catholic operative, John Gehring, e-mailed reporters over the weekend to knock the bishops for criticizing President Barack Obama, even after his administration revised its contraception rule Friday to mandate that insurers not Catholic institutions pay for birth control coverage.
President Obama Birth Control Compromise Divides Catholic Leaders
(snip)
Despite the continued beating Obama is taking from a few religious groups, he has won the support of the one Catholic organization that employs more than 750,000 people and is arguably the most heavily affected by the birth control mandate. The Catholic Health Association, the nation's largest group of nonprofit health systems, considered Obama's accommodation a victory.
"We are pleased and grateful that the religious liberty and conscience protection needs of so many ministries that serve our country were appreciated enough that an early resolution of this issue was accomplished," said Sister Carol Keehan, president and CEO of the Catholic Health Association. "This difference has at times been uncomfortable, but it has helped our country sort through an issue that has been important throughout the history of our great democracy."

(14,337 posts)1. They don't want ANYONE, Catholic or not,
using contraception. The Pill, IUD's, are considered ABORTION to them. That is the underlying issue. It doesn't matter if they are exempt. It is much the say as the Marriage Equality issue. They don't have to marry gay couples? So what, when it is s SIN if they are married AT ALL.
You have understand the mentaility, people. Compromise will never work because there is not compromise. SIN IS SIN, not matter who pays for it, or performs it.

(25,183 posts)2. It would be great
if the President's policies would lead to a split in the RCC, with some breaking away entirely.
On the other hand, if today's Catholics have stayed even after the pedophile scandal, then they may well be impervious to reason.
