Automakers Are Getting Rid Of That New Car Smell

One of the most anticipated parts of owning a new car is the much ballyhooed "new car smell." If you have purchased some new cars recently, you may have noticed that the scent of a brand new interior has been going away.

And that is a good thing.

According to a report released by the non-profit Ecology Center and healthystuff.org, the less pungent "new car smell" is a result of less toxic materials being included in the construction of the interior.

The center has ranked the 2012 Honda Civic at the top of the list, with the lowest concentration of toxic chemicals in the interior of any new car on the market. In fact, Honda took two of the top three spots.

"Are you sure this car is new? It doesn't smell new."

I never really liked that smell, but it certainly was a dead giveaway that the car was brand new.

The last time I bought a car, when I was in that little room with the salesman, I turned down all of the add-ons--including their theft security system. The salesman actually told me that they'd have to remove and replace all the windows that were engraved with the theft security registration number, lol.

It took a lot of effort not to laugh in his face, but I just said, "Fine." Later, I picked up my car--with the still-engraved windows for the security system I wasn't paying for. It struck me as the new version of the old undercoating scheme.
