Rich shouldn’t have to pay taxes, Santorum backer Friess says (& we should "honor & uplift" the 1%)

http://blogs.reuters.com/chrystia-freeland/2012/02/17/rich-shouldn%E2%80%99t-have-to-pay-taxes-santorum-backer-says/

“People don’t realize how wealthy people self-tax,” Friess told me when I asked whether, given the country’s economic troubles, it was fair to ask the rich to pay a bigger share. “You know, there’s a fellow who was the CEO of Target. In Phoenix, he’s created a museum of music. He put in around $200 million of his own money. I have another friend who gave $400 million to a health facility in Nebraska or South Dakota, or someplace like that. You look at Bill Gates, just gave $750 million, I think, to fight AIDS.”

-snip-

As for the idea that an economic age like our own, which is conducive to creating vast fortunes, should also be one in which taxes are high, Friess considers that absurd. “If you look at what Steve Jobs has done for us, what Bill Gates has done for society, the government ought to pay them. Why do they collect money from Gates and Jobs for what they’ve contributed? It’s ridiculous.”

Indeed, Friess is unconvinced by the entire 99 percent paradigm. In his view, it is the Americans at the bottom of income distribution who are getting the free ride.

-snip-

“It’s that top 1 percent that probably contributes more to making the world a better place than the 99 percent. I’ve never seen any poor people do what Bill Gates has done. I’ve never seen poor people hire many people,” he said. “So I think we ought to honor and uplift the 1 percent, the ones who have created value.”

Interesting they would try to combine the most vile and condescending anti-populist economic message with the fundamentalist theocratic christian meme...and think that this will somehow make for the best combo of wide and deep to actually swing a majority of voters.

Oh man yer killin us! Keep doing it.

It's about what all of us working together could do for ourselves if we decided through democratic means what should be done with that part of the wealth that should belong to all of us.

I would like to see a return to high inheritance taxes. The trust fund kids did nothing to create the money they enjoy. The best time to tax wealth is when it changes hands.

If we don't return to taxing wealth at the time it passes from one generation to the next, we will end up with an aristocracy. In fact, we now have an aristocracy thanks to our low inheritance taxes.

The tax on wealth at the point of inheritance should affect the very wealthy, not the modestly wealthy.

society lavishes money upon them, making them -- the 1% in the first place!

i mean, he's missing that rich people *get paid*, and get paid *a lot* to create the value he's praising them for.
so much so that they become -- the 1%!

he acts as if bill gates did it all for minimum wage and then the government should come along and say, hey, for all you've done, why don't we make you the richest man in the world. here, have a check!

...Duke and Earl and Viscount.

And then require that the lower classes refer to them as "My Lord" and "My Lady."

And make it so only the nobility can serve in the Senate and only landowners can vote.

And then change the laws to even better ensure that the wealth stays with the wealthy and is passed from one generation to the next.

Oh, wait. That form of society was already tried and abandoned (for the most part) in Britain. And the U.S. was created to get away from that kind of thing.

Last month it was Romney hatemania. Then it was Gingrich hatemania.

The uplift-the-1% mentality is shared by ALL the candidates. This nomination race is a distraction from the fact that all these candidates want to gut the 99%, and the only contention between them is based on jealousy and the fact that there can be only one.
