Before they can speak, babies make friends: study

Babies still too small to speak know how to make jokes and form friendships, say researchers at an Australian university who have spent two years filming the behaviour of young children.

Academics at Charles Sturt University are studying how children interact with other infants while in childcare using footage obtained from tiny cameras strapped to their heads.

This isn't about making friends but I believe what I have to say is additive to the post.

I remember when my father would lift me over his head.
I was afraid he was going to drop me and I didn't like the feeling.

I remember being in my mother's lap and putting my fingers in her mouth.

I remember liking to sit on my mother's knees and
she would bounce me and sing a song and then
let me drop through her knees and catch me.

The point is that some kids know what is being done
even though they can't speak yet. I try to treat each
child I come in contact with with respect for their feelings
because I remember all those little things.

I remember my aunt finishing her ice cream cone and saying that she was going to take mine because she was still hungry.

Think of all the, seemingly, harmless little ways we tease kids and realize that they haven't learned that adults are just kidding. They feel vulnerable and are learning thru experience.

Maybe some of these early "traumas" are what turns into neurotic behavior later in life.

Just a thought.

all the time - and she started nursery school this year. She definitely has a best friend. In fact she pinned him when they were wrestling the other day. They play to gether all the time. This does not surprise me.

Aubrey starts out on one side of day care every morning at 6. By 9 she's in the middle with a little boy who starts out on the other side of the room. He tickles her feet and the giggle at each other. Babies communicate with each other. There is no doubt about it. You just have to watch them for a little bit with each other and you'll see it. God, these people are wasting money.
