After the death of singer Whitney Houston on Feb. 11, there have been many singers who have paid homage to the singer on stagebut perhaps the most surprising tribute has come from rocker Chris Cornell. The Soundgarden frontman gave a rousing acoustic performance of the song I Will Always Love You (written by Dolly Parton and made famous by Houston in The Bodyguard) during a fundraiser for President Barack Obama in San Francisco . . .

Of course, the post explains that it's Dolly's song -- and the title reminds us of Whitney's rendition.

(50,269 posts)absolutely loved the song at that time. When I heard Whitney Houston's version in "The Bodyguard", I still preferred Dolly's version. I have grown to love both versions and now I have to add a third, Chris's cover is refreshingly different again and I really enjoyed listening to it. Thanks for posting it!

(8,515 posts)Her version is incredible. I love it always first. Whitney's comes second. I find the difference in the two women astounding also. Dolly just keeps on being incredible. I wish Whitney could have also. Both women certainly have lived interesting lives. Dolly must be very proud of her incredible music, and I am not just referring to I Will Always Love You, but you would never know it. She is so incredibly humble, yet always Dolly. I'll miss Whitney, but Dolly and Willie Nelson I will truly grieve for, that is, if I outlive them.

(24,634 posts)I was a Dolly fan growing up even if I am a 31 year old Black woman and loved Dolly's rendition. But I also loved Whitney's version. I think both are excellent.

(17,111 posts)I like Parton's, Houston's and his. They are all unique and work because each singer made it their own. They don't copy in the least.
If somebody is going to cover a classic they should be better than good or make it their own too.
