DU breaking news as of a couple minutes ago. There's kind of an Enquirer smell to it.
The mass media, of course, are much worse.

What's going on in Indonesia? India? Scandinavia? Japan? Antarctica? The Midwest, for that matter?
We already know the Republican candidates are loony. We should just medicate them and be done with it - quoting them benefits no one.

Half a dozen, mostly mindless posts, a day. It wasn't so long ago when DU was the cutting edge of news. My husband was always amazed at how I knew everything before the networks. Not anymore.
Nothing there anymore but political claptrap and 'Enquirer' type articles and all stuff I've seen elsewhere.

Ann Arbor doesn't even HAVE a daily paper for 2 years now. Unless you count the NYTimes or Wall St Journal.

I get my news from the Internet, especially DU.

With the discovery of that ancient lake. It's pretty rare for Antarctica to make headlines.

News is just another form of business. The people who report the news expect to make money from it. How do they do that? They do it by selling advertising that shares the space or the time that they have created. How do they increase the amount of money that they make by hawking the news? They do it by selling more advertising, and also by increasing the price that they can successfully charge their advertisers to advertise using their media. And how do they attract more advertisers who are willing to pay them more and more money to avail themselves of their media? They do that by showing their advertisers their "ratings" which reflect how much the public utilizes their medium.

Finally, how does the media attract more people who will patronize their media and thereby increase their ratings? They do it by pushing buttons in the psyches of their patrons. Buttons like printing sensational stories (whether true or not), by appealing to the sense of anger inside people's minds (whether founded or not), and by appealing to the fear in people's hearts (whether justified or not).

In short, hawking the news is more about making money by controlling people's minds and emotions, than it is about the education and enlightenment of our species. And it is one of the ways that the people on Wall St., as well as elsewhere, create wealth for themselves. They do it by inciting and provoking the emotions of the feeble minded masses who make up the overwhelming majority of our population. And they do it all in the name of truth. The quick red FOX jumped over the lazy brown dog (I don't know why I put that in there).

The right wing knows that, and they are willing to play it for everything that it is worth. That is one of the reasons why they are so dangerous and also one of the reasons why we should not allow ourselves to become complaisant by letting down our guards in the face of what appears to be a sure thing in this November's election.
