Police: Autistic man kept in 'dungeon-like' room

SWEETWATER, Fla. (AP) — Police in a southwest Florida city say charges are pending against a woman whose autistic 30-year-old son was found living in what a caller identified as "dungeon-like" conditions at her mobile home.

Police in Sweetwater, a small city in Miami-Dade County, said in a news release they received an anonymous call Thursday stating that the man was being kept locked up in a home, and that his mother left him alone in the house for long periods.

Authorities went by the home and found a small room with a mattress, a "blacked-out window" and a rusted iron door that locked only from the outside. The news release said the room had no lighting or bathroom and had a foul odor.

Police spokeswoman Michelle Hammontree-Garcia told The Miami Herald that when the unidentified mother and son returned home, the woman was arrested. The man was transported to a hospital with scratches and bruises. Police say charges are pending against the mother.
