In an ironic twist, the dogs of local rabies survivor Jeanna Giese are exposed to bat that tested positive for the disease
Jeanna Giese had a sense of déjà vu Tuesday morning when she spotted a small, brown object lying in the enclosure that holds two of her three Siberian huskies. Using a shovel to get a closer look, the Fond du Lac woman saw a bat, its small body covered with bite marks from the dogs.
We double-bagged the bat and had my vet send it to Madison to have it tested, Giese said. I was hoping that the bat wouldnt test positive for rabies, that it was just another small animal the dogs had gotten a hold of. A phone call from the Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene the next day confirmed Gieses suspicions.
How many people in the entire world can honestly say that a rabid bat has affected their lives twice in nine years? asked Giese, who attracted national attention after contracting rabies herself in 2004 when she was bitten by a rabid bat at Fond du Lacs St. Patricks Catholic Church.
The 24-year-old was the first person in history to survive the rabies virus without having a rabies vaccine.
