I'll posit that the term is useful for describing certain currents/issues that resonate with both libertarians and the anti-authoritarian left.

The NSA/national surveillance state and related issues.

The war on drugs.

The notion that the police are out of control/frequently brutal/militarized.

The sense that the government works for elites/corporations.

Imperialist foreign wars.

I think Democrats are foolish if they cede these issues to the Paulites.

I also think a lot of young people are increasingly skeptical and cynical about government. Perhaps with some reason.
