HazMat on scene of Lawtell (LA) train derailment, evacuations ordered (1 mile radius)

LAWTELL, LA (WAFB) -

An evacuation order is in effect for residents living within a 1-mile radius of a train derailment just east of Lawtell near Frank Road on US 190 Highway.

The evacuation is just a precaution in the Opelousas area since the incident caused the shutdown of the highway on both eastbound and westbound sides, according to Louisiana State Police. A HazMat team is conducting an ongoing investigation.

The LSP reports that at least 26 train cars came off the track at around 3:15 p.m. on Sunday afternoon, August 4. According to State Police, some of the cars were carrying hazardous material, however it is unclear if any train cars have been spilled.

Traffic is being diverted from the US 190 eastbound side to LA 103, and the US 190 westbound side is being detoured to LA 104 to LA 3043.
