Oakland’s Creepy New Surveillance Program

Earlier this week, the Oakland City Council voted to approve the second phase of a $10.9 million surveillance center that would enable the City to engage in widespread warrantless surveillance of Oakland residents who have engaged in no wrongdoing whatsoever. This is a terrible blow to privacy.

The so-called Domain Awareness Center (DAC) would consolidate a vast network of surveillance data. The project was initially supposed to be about port security.

But in a classic illustration of mission creep, the project as proposed would have pulled in over 1,000 cameras and sensors pointed at Oakland residents, including 700 cameras in Oakland schools.

While surveilling schoolchildren is not going to secure the Port of Oakland, it would allow for the comprehensive tracking of innocent Oakland residents.

The DAC would enable the city to track individuals when they visit the abortion clinic, the Alcoholics Anonymous meeting, or the union hall, or engage in other private activities.

that would be able, using facial recognition software, to track every public movement of everyone, everywhere, doing everything. Combine that with the same tracking capability using cell phones, as well as universal Internet and telco data gathering, along with terrorist profiling three hops out, and you have TIA.

TIA is real. TIA exists, only it's not called that anymore, and is instead a bunch of interlinked programs spread across government agencies. PRISM is just one of them.

meetings every time, arguing against bullshit legislation. The resistance in Oakland is thick, and that piece of shit Quan continues her DHS-driven attack upon those who dare to stand up. This is a clear message to go home and shut up. Which Oakland activists will not do. Fuck Quan, fuck the DHS and surveillance state, fuck the 1% who are stealing our very freedoms. Note that the "vote" on this surveillance center occurred after midnight, after many attending had gone home.
