President Bill Clinton and Malawian President Joyce Banda greet people outside of Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe, Malawi on August 1, 2013. President Clinton, Chelsea Clinton, and President Banda toured the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI) clinic at the hospital, which is providing HIV testing and treatment including Point-of-Care Testing and Early Infant Diagnosis and Treatment.

Following a tour of the Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe, Malawi, President Bill Clinton and Chelsea Clinton meet with expert clients on August 1, 2013. Expert clients are HIV-positive patients who use their experiences to teach others in their community who are recently-diagnosed with HIV how to care for themselves and for their children. Through the Clinton Health Access Initiative's Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission program, these expert clients' children are HIV-negative.

The Clinton Development Initiative established the Anchor Farm Project in 2008 to help smallholder farmers in Malawi create sustainable farming solutions and increase their income. Since then, the project has expanded to include four 1,000 hectare “anchor” farms that partner with more than 21,000 local smallholder farmers, and provide them with access to quality inputs for maize and soya production, agronomic training, and access to formal markets. Yesterday, President Clinton, Chelsea, and the delegation visited the newest Anchor Farm Project in Santhe, Malawi, where Elinat Mtupanyana, an Anchor Farm Project field officer, demonstrated how to incorporate soya into recipes. We recently asked Elinat a few questions about the Anchor Farm Project, the benefits soya, her role as a female field officer, and how she thinks the Anchor Farm is beneficial to farmers, their families, and their communities.

What is your connection to smallholder farmers, as a Clinton Development Initiative field officer?

As a Clinton Development Initiative field officer, I am involved in community mobilization, helping smallholder farmers form small farmers groups. These groups gain the knowledge and motivation to improve their agribusiness and their lives. They also host field days to share with other community members new farming techniques, information about soya, and encourage them to use any opportunity (from casual labor to field days) to improve the way they farm for their own families.

What are the benefits of the program of the commercial farm?

The employees benefit because they earn a living but also get training at the same time. The communities directly around the farm are farming themselves, so they are able to come to the farm to get inputs and learning new farming techniques and work during the harvest season,

What is it like to be a female facilitator in these communities?

I feel like a record-breaker and a pioneer because throughout the country’s history, field officers and extension agents have been men. I also love that I can help women in activities that create economic growth. There are two reactions from men when they see that I work in the soya fields: They either enjoy working with women, finding us to be more trustworthy and reliable, or they still believe that women should be subordinate or remain in home-based roles, not making decisions or leading. These men often still participate, but they sometimes don’t like to be seen as relying on women for education.

How long have you worked with soya?

I began working with soya because I saw how important the nutrition-rich food was for mothers and children. Many mothers were taking their children to nutrition rehabilitation centers, which took a lot of time and was expensive. Using soya they could create the same food at home, their children would be healthier, and they wouldn’t have to spend time traveling to the rehabilitation centers.

What is the impact of using soya?

Soya agriculture has become popular very quickly because farmers can maximize production of their land by rotating soya and maize. Farmers are now more motivated to go into soya production because they know they can be successful. When farmers used to get 2 bags per acre – each bag is 50 kg – and now farmers’ yields are more than 23 kg per acre. Lately, the declining tobacco market has had a big impact on the community. Farmers saw that tobacco prices were stagnant for a long time, while soya prices were steadily increasing.

There is also a big benefit because soya is also a short-term crop – it matures quickly, especially relative to tobacco, so women have more time to invest in other activities besides field work. The early harvest lets women use the income from crop sales to diversify nutrition and benefit from price rise by engaging in crop trading! Because they have money early, they buy other crops like beans, consume some, and sell the rest when prices rise. This is increasing their profits even more.

What impacts are you seeing for women from soya?

We often work with mothers learn to feed their children with soya. Mothers with malnourished children learn to prepare the exact product (likuni phala) in their own homes and mothers with healthier children learn to prevent malnutrition by incorporating soya into a balanced diet. These are important lessons because early childhood nutrition plays a large part in their emotional and intellectual development and by keeping their families healthy mothers avoid lost time or money taking family members to the clinic, even worse, spending weeks in the hospital with a seriously malnourished child.

With the extra income made from soya’s high yield, women are investing in their homes and are able to send their children to school.

In any event - kudos to the Big Dog and Chelsea for their mission; all I respectfully ask is they bring some of that attention to the poor in the USA (including the Native Americans that a poster notes above)!

That such great people as The Clintons and the Carters are forced to do all of their much needed and much appreciated charity work in foreign countries. Our nation is so full of hateful bastards (some of whom made themselves known in this very thread) that heartfelt charity work cannot be accomplished in this country because of the pettiness and divisiveness of those who are so offended by someone in need receiving the aide and the help that they so much need.

The ACA is a prime example. Taken for it's positive actions to empower policyholders alone, the ACA would be an overwhelming success. But........add in subsidies for the less fortunate and expanding Medicaid for the destitute, and the extremely wealthy, most of whom will only be affected in a most positive way, choose to berate the entire program by dropping turds into the punch bowl. Some people just cannot stand the very thought of someone in need getting the help that they need without having to pay the very same dollar amount for it. Yes, America is full of douchebags, and they seem to enjoy letting everyone know just exactly who they are.

This family is made up of angels. Good people, the husband, the wife and the dauhgter. You can see it in their eyes and their actions. How pathetic that the reich wing gets to call this family 'elitist'. And many other liberals.

Yes, that disgusting man who was your president for 8 years, who's daddy was president and his grandfather a disgusting nazi supporter (prescott Bush) and coup d'etat plotter, is 'down to earth'. Yes, when you can blind 3/4 of a nation, that's who gets to be down to earth, and a good hearted little man like Clinton is an 'elitist'. A man who came from nothing, and became everything. Obama even more so. Obama's election actually was the embodiement of 'the American dream'. Even if that dream is almost a nightmare, here you had a half black man, single mother and grandparents raised him, regular middle class folks, and he becomes president. Like a movie. People would have even said such a movie was unrealistic.

Remember that nazi-supporter's grandson? Who went to Haiti with Bill Clinton to 'help', who, after touching a black Haitian hand WIPED HIS HAND ON CLINTON's shirt? Yes, that's a down to earth guy.

Their new residence lays claim to being one of New York's longest apartments - stretching an entire block from 26th St. to 27th St. off Madison Avenue.

Described as 'a luxury fortress' with one full-time doorman to the horizontal building's four units, it takes almost 30 seconds to walk the 250-foot hallway, according to New York Daily News.

The four-bedroom, 5,000-square-foot apartment is located in The Whitman building next to Madison Square Park, one of the most desirable corners of Manhattan's Flatiron District. The building, which is being marketed by Douglas Elliman Real Estate, has one apartment on each floor and boasts various security features, including a key operated lift and a full time doorman for just four units.

The nearly 90-year-old building has just three $10million homes and one $22.5million duplex penthouse - so far two buyers are in contract, including Ms Clinton.

The couple will also enjoy two dishwashers, two washer/dryers, his and her maze-like closet spaces and commodes, as well as natural light flooding the female dressing room - with double-sided vanity mirrors.

'Wives eyes light up when they see the closets,' said Ms Lazenby, the daughter of James Bond actor George Lazenby.

'They smile and say they'll need more clothes to live here. Their husbands just shake their heads.

'The long apartment, located at 21 East 26th St enables 'one spouse to be fast asleep while the other has a huge dinner party. All on one floor,' she added.

One person who toured the building, which was built in 1924 by luxury textile manufacturer Clarence B. Whitman & Sons, joked that residents of The Whitman will have a longer walk to their kitchen than many New Yorkers have to the corner store.

57. Your post is so full of inaccurate assumptions that it almost sounds like sarcasm.

WHAT photo Ops???????? Do you even have a remote idea what the Clinton Foundation does and what it means to the lives of thousands in Africa and in other parts of the world? IMO, one of the foundation's greatest achievements has been to negotiate with various drug companies to reduce the cost of ARVs. This has meant that thousands of people who could not have afforded the drugs, and otherwise would have died without treatment, are still alive. The average cost in Africa of the generic version of these drugs was $600 per year per person. The foundation managed to lower the cost to $60 per year.

"The second large-scale strategy involves third-party consultation and price negotiation with generic ARV suppliers, a practice introduced by the Clinton Foundation HIV/AIDS Initiative (CHAI) in 2003. In practice, CHAI attempts to make ARVs more affordable by negotiating price ceilings that reflect suppliers’ costs plus reasonable and sustainable profit margins. Moreover, CHAI furthers this strategy by providing direct technical assistance to some suppliers to help lower their production costs. The resulting ceiling prices are made available to all members of the CHAI procurement consortium. Countries that wish to become part of the consortium sign a memorandum of understanding with CHAI and manufacturers are required to offer ARVs to these countries at prices equal to or less than CHAI-negotiated ceiling prices."

Here's another article on the subject.

I find your post so offensive and dismissive of the labor of not just the Clintons, but of the hundreds who work and volunteer at the foundation, that I better stop before I write something really nasty.

I have been with Clinton when he has talked in detail not only about what the foundation and CGI does, but the mistakes made during his administration on the same issues. He said that some charitable things that were initiated while he was in office as official aid, he found out after leaving office could have been done for 4% of the cost. When asked why this wasn't discovered earlier, he answered without hesitation, "because we were stupid, that's why!" That's not the answer of someone who does it for show. That's the answer of someone who cares.

Some seem to be blinded by hate and will write any nasty thing that pops into their minds, no matter how nonsensical and removed from the truth it may be. This place can be depressing, far too often it seems like a RW site. Read the comments on any Clinton article, some of them could have been written by Freepers.

Bill loves to go on these semi annual trips and to have Chelsea with him must have made the trip extra special. Chelsea has turned into such a lovely woman. She's as smart as her parents and has inherited their best qualities. They are both so proud of her.
