(23,720 posts)As far as I know, Ash Wednesday is a time to contemplate your relationship with god and a reminder that man came from dust and to dust he shall return.Rick must not have must not have contemplated his relationship with God for very long today.
it also marks the beginning of Lent

On Edit: His "anti-sex" position isn't about religion. He just doesn't get any and is upset that most of us get it several times a week.

(63,708 posts)I thought that was a Big Deal. During the whole Passion thing aren't the faithful required to be on their knees in the church praying and following the stations of the cross?
What happened to these religious guys? Why are they not being an EXAMPLE of their religious beliefs?

As I said in another post, I bet Biden's wearing his ashes, and he sets the right kind of example. Not shoving it down peoples' throats.

(1,364 posts)If you are going to criticize someone for their religious practices at least do so from knowledge. Stations of the Cross occur on Good Friday. And, it is not necessarily done on one's knees. There are many of us Liberal Christians who do walk the walk rather than talk the talk like the Prosperity Christians. Google is your friend. What are you an example of?
CTyankee
(63,708 posts)On or off you knees, whatever.
My point is and I will be very, very clear for you: what are these guys who profess to be so religious doing out of church on such a solemn day?
If you can't take that point, I can't really help you any further...

(373 posts)Let's be careful here. I have seen pictures of him with ashes on his forehead and it really pissed me off when Dennis Miller said, "President Obama must of put out his cigarette on Biden's forehead" Total disregard and intolerance for others beliefs.

Can't we talk about their "wearing their religion on their forehead" and their lack of compassion about the poor, their support for torture, and their desire to put women back to the Middle Ages?
PLEASE. there is a real disconnect here...
WolverineDG
(22,298 posts)that you don't have to be in church all day on Ash Wednesday. Many many people go to Mass before work, during lunch, or after work. Sheesh. And not every one fasts on Ash Wednesday either, but hey, don't let facts stop the hate train.....

(63,708 posts)These guys are the ones who are making a HUGE issue out of their religiosity.* I was poking a bit of fun at them for their pomposity. I have found in my long life that truly religious people do not go around being sanctimonious and condemning others for not being as religious as they are.
I guess you are saying that their glass houses aren't vulnerable to ridicule...
*and I am not the only one sick of hearing about it. Esp. from the serial adulterer who wants to instruct us all on how to live our lives.
On edit: Oh, and while I'm at it, what about Rick's declaration that there is no such thing as liberal Christians? What do you call that, "love"? I know quite a few of them, having worked in the Interfaith Peace movement during the Vietnam War era. So I will thank you for not lecturing me when I point out the obvious disparity of "practicing what they preach." Shees.

(1,364 posts)When you make comments that YOU intend to be sarcastic, then maybe you should do something to at least indicate at some level or another that that is your intent. I'm not a mind-reader and I don't think anyone else is, oh, I'm sorry, you are. Sarcasm thingee inserted here. I don't usually go around publicizing what I do, all I did was say that I walked the walk. I did not get into any specifics, or do I even want to. As the Scripture in yesterday's services said, don't let your right hand know what your left hand does. My faith community and the greater community that I serve do know what I do.
Good for you that you did do something during the Vietnam era. So did I. More importantly, rather than resting on past laurels, are you still doing something now?
CTyankee
(63,708 posts)This is not about you, BTW.
Bohunk68
(1,364 posts)then why did you reply to my post in the manner that you did? If you were making a generic post, then it should have been posted at the end of the line, not to my post in particular.
CTyankee
(63,708 posts)that is all (well, maybe sarcastic, too). It was about the puffed up religious bigots who go around condemning and hating others while proclaiming themselves good Christians. It was not and is not now about you.
Now leave it be. We both have more important things to do with our time...

(25,415 posts)But I don't think it stops you from carrying on about your everyday life. My husband did an Ash Wednesday service last night (he is a church organist). Lots of people coming by church after work. Santorum, I suppose, was doing his "job". Too bad he won't really be repenting for all the horrible crap he says about gays and women and whatnot. He has a lot of repentance to do in my mind.
CTyankee
(63,708 posts)such as your husband I am sure do not go around hating on other religions, women and gays.
But I guess haters gotta hate...too bad, really...

(25,415 posts)We are part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church and they allow the ordination of LBGT pastors. We have had actual members leave because of the policy. But hey, it is their loss.

(6,664 posts)So he wasn't breaking any church rules or regs. He's still a slimeball, says this Catholic, but the church doesn't require Mass attendance or ashes on Ash Wednesday.

(16,646 posts)Nice try, but no. Even more so, it would be considered wrong by many to appear on television with the ashes still on your forehead. It's a tough call, but you're not suppose to hide your faith, or wear your piousness on your sleave. So, yeah, clean it off if you're bragging, but leave it if your intent is to hide your faith.
