Ephemeral
Fleeting things, water under the bridge, lost to time,all of which are qualities that our conversations have for us, but no longer have for the government. I'm very troubled by this. The notion that a wiretap warrant doesn't apply only to the future, but opens the entirety of the past including every micro rant uttered in frustration at the system or individual political figures is now there for the cherry picking.
Add to this we now know there is a team who specialize in burying the truth that this cache of history was used to identify someone for prosecution. Who specialize in finding constitutionally clean evidence for a prosecution and the actual source that identifies someone cannot be confronted or their affidavit reviewed at trial.
We have no idea how this trove is actually used. Did it help maintain the status quo back when W was firing US Attorneys who were working on corruption cases? Was it used against reporters? Maybe to identify who should be hounded into suicide?
Does this trove actually contain the calls of people who are abusing its contents? Is it being used to lift or place a yoke of blackmail on those who's votes matter? Is it being used to find inside traders and price fixers?
So many things we need to know about this program and will likely never find out. I fear our republic is also somewhat ephemeral.
