I've been hired to be an election worker for next week's NJ senatorial primary.

Two hours of training, one devoted to the machine and securing the votes and another hour to signatures and provisional ballots. Fortunately in NJ, photo ID isn't necessary for the general voting public or even if the book advises ID is necessary for a particular voter. In the latter case, you can use non-photo ID like a library card.

The workers are allowed to read during down time, but nothing political.

I'll report back in a week about what I noticed.

I haven't served as a poll worker, but years ago I volunteered my home for a polling place for a few years. It was kind of a thrill to witness the process.

Up until the year they switched to scanners and got rid of the old mechanical voting booths. It can be a very long, boring day, but if it's a big election it's not bad. I had been "promoted" to Assistant Registrar by by the time I left (moved to a new town). It's funny, they call it a "volunteer" position, but we were paid $110 a day.

Have fun!
