I'm sorry, but that's too many damn shoes. Enough, already.

Gun control advocates gather in Trenton to press Christie to sign legislation

TRENTON — Gun control advocates and a few family members of murder victims today gathered in front of the Statehouse and called on Gov. Chris Christie to sign a massive bill that overhauls many of the state’s gun laws.

“We really view it as a responsible gun owner bill,” said Nicola Bocour, executive director of Ceasefire NJ. “The provisions in there really are focused on making sure gun owners exercise responsibility and that we’re doing everything we can to protect, first and foremost, our children.”

The bill (S2723) would encode firearms purchase permit information either on driver’s licenses or separate photo ID cards. It would also require gun buyers to show they’ve completed safety training courses and stiffen penalties for letting kids access guns, among other things.

The press conference took place on the Statehouse steps. Organizers laid out pairs of shoes to represent New Jersey residents shot to death since the December Newtown, Conn., school shooting.

“These shoes produce a powerful, physical reminder of the toll of gun violence in our state,” said Mandi Perlmutter, a leader of New Jersey’s chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America.
