I just got a phone call from my 85 year old father, who lives in Maryland. He just recently moved back there after living in Tenn. for about 5 years. He went down to the DMV to change over his drivers license and was told his social security card, which is the original he has been carrying since he was 16, was/is invalid. Had to file for a new one. So what the hell is that all about?????

Sounds like someone doesn't know what they're talking about:
To Renew Your Maryland License, Please Bring:
Your expiring Driver's License and the fee.
You must pass a vision screening or submit a Vision Screening form.
You will be required to provide proof of a social security number (SSN) that can be verified by the Social Security Administration, or proof of ineligibility for an SSN. If you held a valid Maryland driver's license, permit or identification card prior to April 19, 2009, you may be eligible for a subsequent license, permit, or identification card without proof of lawful presence or SSN, but it will not be acceptable for official federal purposes.
License may be renewed without additional tests up to one year after expiration.
Driving with an expired license is against the law.
Also this:
NEW Applicant Effective June 1, 2009
A new applicant for a learner's permit, driver's license, moped operator's permit or identification card must present (1) document to prove age and identity, (1) document to prove they possess a valid, verifiable Social Security Number (SSN) or proof of ineligibility for an SSN, (1) document to prove lawful status in the United States and (2) Maryland residency documents.

(15,189 posts)I have my original birth certificate, and I needed a new one when I moved to PA to get a drivers license. I never got the PA license because PA does NOT know how to run PennDot. They say they're open till 5, but get there at 4:45, they'll tell you they're closed. Fuck you PA. I drove around for 3 years with expired CA tags and no PA license. And I ain't NEVER going back.

(12,448 posts)"For Social Security Purposes Not For Identification", which is of course no longer true and was one of the greatest objections to SS back when. Americans used to be so jealous of their privacy that the idea of the government having a record on everybody was simply unacceptable.
