The Mining Journal is the name of the local area paper... Negaunee where I live used to have 10 to 15 underground iron mines around it.... now all the underground mines are closed but there are two massive open pit mines nearby that provide thousands of jobs to the area.

The High School Mascot is of course a Miner for the Negaunee Miners.... and the closest town to Negaunee is Ispeming which are called the Ishpeming Hematites (a type of iron ore)

An interesting fact is that mining is one of the few areas where there are protections on the importing of ore... otherwise all the mines would close due to foreign competitors.

Unlike the manufacturing industry which was decimated by NAFTA since the early 90s when it was implemented.
