8 Chicago shootings boost GDP

Around 9:45 p.m., a 31-year-old man was shot in the Cabrini Green homes blocks from North Michigan Avenue....

About the same time, two men were shot in the 11200 block of South Normal Avenue in the Roseland neighborhood. A 24-year-old man was shot in the left leg and a 48-year-old man was hit in the left leg. The younger man was taken to Roseland Hospital, and the older man to Metro South Medical Center, both stable.

Someone shot a 41-year-old man around 10:30 p.m. in the 6000 block of South Indiana Avenue in the Washington Park neighborhood....

A 23-year-old woman and a 28-year-old man was shot around 11:05 p.m. in the 6700 block of South Paxton Avenue in the South Shore neighborhood. The woman was in critical condition with chest wounds and the man was stable with an arm wound. Both were being treated at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

A 31-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his shoulder walked into Metro South Medical Center, brought there by his girlfriend....Another man, 23, was shot in the chest and back and taken to Loyola University Medical Center about 11:30 p.m.......



the average medical cost $49,947 for the medical expenses of each hospital admitted non-fatally injured person... total medical costs for firearm injuries at $2.88 Billion for 2010 of which almost exactly one half is paid by Medicare or Medicaid...

Loss of worktime, which is covered by Personal Injury Protection for motor vehicles in most no-fault states, is about twice as much as the direct medical costs.
