and if the parents answer the clue phone, they'll realize the judge is trying to save their kid getting the hell beaten out of him all the way through school.

Given the judge's statements it seems she's enforcing a Christian view on the family. This statement will be the one to get her overturned if it is true and accurate: "The word Messiah is a title and it's a title that has only been earned by one person and that one person is Jesus Christ." That's clearly promoting one religion's views over all others.

Would she have changed the kid's name if they tried to make it Allah?

They take some things just as seriously as US fundies do. I doubt anyone will want to overturn this one over there.

Besides, pity the poor child whose diminutive name would be "Mess."

The article linked in the OP is certainly in a Belfast paper. So I can understand your confusion. But the court case is in E. Tennessee. The original story seems to have come from WBIR-TV out of Knoxville, TN. http://www.wbir.com/news/article/284063/2/Despite-Tennessee-Judges-order-Messiah-among-fastest-growing-baby-names

Since I'm from TN, middle TN, I'm not in the least surprised a judge there would make such a blatantly unconstitutional decision biased entirely toward Christianity. The other two Abrahamic religions (Judaism and Islam) don't even recognize Jesus as the Messiah or son of God. But this judge has decided that the Christian Messiah, Jesus of Nazareth, is THE Messiah for everyone. I don't really see that flying on appeal.

A judge does not get to arbitrarily change someone's name. Period. if I were the parents I'd blow it off, and if the court tries to persist, throw lawyers at the judge until he 's broke and off the bench.

But then I saw you had beaten me to it. I'm glad I'm not the only person on this board who hears Monty Python dialog in his head during everyday situations.
