PRESS RELEASE

The Free Press to publish weekly: Editors say it’s needed “Now More Than Ever”

Proclaiming the end of monopoly news in Columbus, Bob Fitrakis announced today the creation of a new weekly alternative voice – The Columbus Free Press (“The Free Press”). “The Free Press is independent. We are not beholden to the city’s unelected power elite and we will provide muck-raking investigative journalism,” Fitrakis stated. The new Free Press publication will debut in early September.

Fitrakis will serve as Editor-in-Chief of the new publication. He has been Editor of the freepress.org online newspaper since 1996 and published the Columbus Free Press as a monthly/quarterly newspaper since 1992. Fitrakis was an award-winning investigative reporter for Columbus Alive! between 1996-2002 and acted as Contributing Editor. He also wrote a provocative column on central Ohio politics called “Bob Bites Back.”

The daily operations of the weekly Free Press publication will be controlled by Managing Editor Michael Alwood. He was the network television sports anchor at AFM-Europe, the largest broadcasting operation in the entire American Forces Radio and Television Service. He also served as the Program and News Director at KDEF in Albuquerque, New Mexico and more recently as the Station Manager at WVKO-1580AM, Columbus’ progressive talk station. Alwood also spent the last two decades as a sports writer and was a three-time winner of the Ohio Prep Sports Writer’s Association Writer of the Year Award.

"There are too many tales in this town that have yet to be told," Alwood said. "Those in power would prefer to keep the masses uninformed. And that's where The Free Press will fill the void. Unabashed and unafraid, The Free Press will provide valuable insight and information that might otherwise be overlooked by Central Ohio's major media outlets."

“Our slogan is “The Free Press: Now More Than Ever,” Fitrakis explained, “We believe the people in central Ohio support hard-hitting fact-based stories. We intend to ‘afflict the comfortable and comfort the afflicted.’”

The Columbus Free Press is published by The Free Press Now, LLC, a venture of the Columbus Institute for Contemporary Journalism and Columbus Compact Corporation. The Free Press is located at 1021 E. Broad Street, Columbus, OH 43205.
