Here Are All Of The Nations That Incarcerate More Of Their Population Than The U.S.

No country incarcerates a higher percentage of its population than the United States. At 716 per 100,000 people, according to the International Centre for Prison Studies, the U.S. tops every other nation in the world.

which means it doesn't take many incarcerations to bump up the rate per 100K.

And as is the case here, non-whites make up the majority of those incarcerated, even though whites make up the majority of the population at large.

Not sure where you're getting your figures, and what you mean by "offenders". The study looks at prison population.

Canada's not so slap-happy about imprisoning minor offenders.

Rate of adults in the correctional system declines slightly in 2010/2011

In 2010/2011, there were, on average, about 163,000 adult offenders (18 years or over) in Canada’s correctional system on any given day (Table 1).4 Although the number of offenders was about 950 more than in 2009/2010, after controlling for population changes, the rate (616 offenders per 100,000 adults) was about 1% lower than the previous year.5 The rate of adults under correctional supervision was nearly 7% lower than a decade ago, with most of the decline occurring between 2002/2003 and 2004/2005 (Chart 1).

The total correctional population consists of offenders who are supervised in the community combined with those in a provincial, territorial or federal custodial facility. As has been the case historically, the majority (77%) of adults under correctional supervision in 2010/2011 were in the community, usually on probation, and about one-quarter (23%) were incarcerated.

Child molesters who got sentences that were too short, now living near a school somewhere.

War criminals, from W., Cheney, on down to the Blackwater thugs, still walking free.

That's one of the biggest problems. We imprison people for the damnedest minor things and we let some of the worst types of criminals walk free. We also imprison FAR TOO MANY people who merely enjoyed what Nature has to offer. Heaven help some poor black guy who happened to be the closest black guy to a racist cop after that cop sees some crime has happened.

Add to all that, prison in America is a money making industry.

get involved in cases involving "low-level, nonviolent drug offenders". They leave those to the state.

Labor camps should be included in incarceration statistics.
