Photographer Anthony Karens use of the word sir in emails might stem from his service in the Marine Corps. It could also be indicative of his humanitarian side and his affiliations with charities including Friends in Deed, Smile Train, and the Humane Society.
That simple level of politeness is also a small window into how he has been able to document as a photojournalist many of the most feared, secretive, and marginalized pockets of society around the world.
On his website, Karen writes that his passion for photography began during a trip to Haiti, where he documented Vodou rituals around the country. From there he has created series about Skinheads, the Westboro Baptist Church, and the Ku Klux Klan.
Gaining access to secretive pockets of society is based upon trust, something Karen doesnt take lightly and that he sees as a foundation of photojournalism. Its a moment thats constantly validated, the wordless acceptance into someones personal space with a camera, Karen wrote via email.

(5,049 posts)These folks aren't just backwoods kooks, they are dangerous. Dangerous to their children, to their neighbors, and to a country at large. I live near the now defunct compound of the once powerful Aryan Nations here in Idaho. Not only do these assholes preach hate, they act on it committing unspeakable crimes of torture and murder.
If anyone wants to publish photos of the Klan, let them post "real" klan photos. You know what I mean - we must never forget what they have done and what they continue to do to minorities thanks to their sick and twisted ideas.

(8,155 posts)This is suppose to be a photo essay of a day in the life of a Klansman right now. Not the day in the life of a Klansman 100 years ago.

(5,049 posts)There is no real difference between the Klan then and now except for better marketing and useful idiots looking for a chance to build a portfolio. I see this as an attempt to humanize the inhumane, to put a friendly face on monsters. There is no "New Klan" just at there is no "New Confederacy." The goal of the Klan remains the same - White Power and the subjugation of all others by any means necessary.

(8,155 posts)And the Klan of today, you likely know nothing about the KKK in the early 20th century.
The philosophy is the same. But they are essentially powerless now and relegated to a few thousand backwoods pieces of shit.

(5,049 posts)But I'll bet there's a clan or white supremacist group in you town and almost every town in America. Just because they don't march down the street (very often) don't think they are gone. They are everywhere and they hate with the same white hot heat that they always have.
The Internet has made it easier for them to organize outside the public eye.
If you don't believe me, ask the Southern Poverty Law Center - they know just how dangerous the modern Klan is.

(1,451 posts)Do you see this shit???? All you TROLLS!!!!!!!!! You run around this site playing coy. Do you see what we see???? Some nasty ass clowns with homemade costumes, roaches, shitty tattoos, rope fashion fetishes, and the nastiest homes I have ever seen. They are so busy trying to have white pride and planning purity weddings, and swearing in ceremonies, that they forgot to take pride in teaching the child how to put her shoes on the proper foot. Simple people with simple minds do simple things.
