Dream Cruise guide: Our tips for navigating the world's biggest one-day car event

Ready or not, the Woodward corridor in Oakland County has been transformed into a moving car show this week. And the curtain rises Saturday on the final act — the official day of the Woodward Dream Cruise — for what some people predict could be the all-time granddaddy of the big cruise’s 19-year run.

Here’s a guide to what you need to know:

WEATHER: Perfect for old muscle cars and young moms with strollers. Look for dry, sunny skies and highs in the upper 70s today and around 80 Saturday. So wear sunscreen and a crazy hat, and consider a jacket if you’re heading out early. Tonight’s low is expected around 58 degrees.

Also, carry a water bottle or prepare to buy liquids from charity groups or restaurants on the route. There are portable toilets on the route but no drinking fountains.

PARKING: See the Detroit Free Press guide and map to find where you can stash your vehicle, then walk or ride a shuttle bus to see dreamier wheels rolling or parked along Woodward.

Of course, avoid using Woodward to get to any specific location on Woodward; that means avoid using the Woodward exit from I-696, which is always jammed. Instead, take north-south roads that are east and west of Woodward, such as Coolidge (which will be closed between Woodward and 13 Mile), Greenfield, Southfield, and I-75. Then, thread your way close to Woodward on mile and half-mile roads. But remember, Woodward closes at 10 tonight and 9 Saturday night. Police will force all traffic off at mile roads.
