My Occupy Gave a Nice Welcome To Our City To Newt Today

Occupy Federal Way in Federal Way WA had an opportunity to welcome the former Sweeper of the House to our town. He is the first Presidential candidate to visist the city ever.

As we waited for him to speak people began to take note of our presence, they responded with questions like What is the 99% mean, They are wasting their time, the national media photographed us, and we made direct contact with the Mayor who said he was glad to see a refreshing form of democracy at work in the community. One of our group had a Secret Service agent on her ass figuratively and literally,essentially was almost physical contact.

Well Newt finally made his presence and walked the rope shaking hands and made his way back to the podium. When he began to speak our group TURNED OUR BACKS ....we had made signs(1ft x 1ft) that just said 99% pinned to our backs,that's all. And we stood there quiet and respectful...no mic check, no outburst, everything the Occupy movement has been known for we did opposite and I think it surprised the community and cemented that we are there to be part of the process in a positive fashion.

What a wonderful successful day.

I'm thinking he's too seasoned a politician to comment on dissenters while they are right there. Good to hear--no, make that GREAT to hear that there popular media folks on hand to record your presence. Here's hoping you make the News!

It looked to be a strong, dignified form of dissent from what you describe...newt probably had to find an anthill to stomp in afterward,LOL

Silence is powerful sometimes.

You have a good mayor who respects the people's rights. Lucky you. I wish I could the same for some of the other cities, Chicago, Oakland and NYC.
