Banker Reportedly Leaves 1% Tip In Defiance of 'The 99%'

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/02/24/banker-1-percent-tip-receipt_n_1299280.html?icid=maing-grid7|main5|dl1|sec1_lnk2%26pLid%3D138350

A banker left a 1% tip in defiance of 'the 99%' at a Newport Beach restaurant the other week, according to his dining companion and underling who snapped a photo of the receipt and posted it to his blog, Future Ex Banker.

A call to the restaurant stiffed with the 1% tip, True Food Kitchen, was referred to their corporate office, but has not yet been returned.

In posting the photo, the employee gave some background on his boss and the receipt:

Mention the “99%” in my boss’ presence and feel his wrath. So proudly does he wear his 1% badge of honor that he tips exactly 1% every time he feels the server doesn’t sufficiently bow down to his Holiness. Oh, and he always makes sure to include a “tip” of his own.

The "tip" of his own in this case was to tell the server to "get a real job." Pleasant.

What an asshole.

This was posted here earlier without reference to the person's blog. http://www.democraticunderground.com/1002347601

So HuffPost picks up the story, links the (now deleted/offline) blog and adds in additional personal details that just may cost this individual their job. In this economy.

Way to go, if the goal is the pursuit of tabloid journalism - anything for a buck and all that. Person tries to expose crude behavior and HuffPost wants to out them to the world and potentially, their asshole boss.

I am firmly with the 99% and am very very liberal, but I have to say that this story seems fishy and the receipt seems like a photoshop from the tip and notes, to the blacked out portions. As Lucky said, above, most/all bankers expense all their meals, so this banker was likely just saving the company's money, which isn't really a good motive for pissing off a server. If the service was that bad, wouldn't the written advice be about that and not for them to get a better job? Just seems too over the top, a one percent tip from a one percenter? I would like to believe it, but I am skeptical. I think the blogger's motives were noble, even if it was made up, but still I am having a hard time with this one.

Still, better than no tip which I've gotten before. Once I noticed a customer had left her purse so I ran down two flights of stairs to the parking lot, found them and returned it. She was very grateful! When I got back and cleared the table they had left me zip.

My all time favorite was the older gentleman who started his dining experience by stacking some bills on the edge of the table and informing me that every time he felt something wasn't to his liking he would remove a bill. I took the drink order and placed it with the always busy bartender and brought them the drinks as soon as they were ready. Sure enough, he removed a bill right in front of me. Needles to say the rest of his meal was easily one of the most flagrantly horrible I ever served. I made sure I earned that zero.

However, I think there's a fair chance that it isn't true. For example, if the guy got fired, why would he take down his blog? He's not going to get a recommendation, anyhow, and may not be able to find a similar job, if the asshole wants to be an asshole.

Second, it wouldn't be difficult to fake a merchant copy like this one, then cancel the charge. Easy peasy.

Third, a banker on an expense account for lunch probably wouldn't do this anyhow...there would be no point, and he'd probably want to return to this restaurant, if it's near work. Looks like a very nice lunch spot to me.

I'm not willing to accept stuff like this without some kind of confirmation. If Breanna says it's true, or the restaurant manager confirms it, OK. If not and the story goes no further, then I'm going to log it as "who knows?"

If everyone in this country got a "real job" according to this jerk, who would take out his trash, serve his food, clean his toilet, pick up his clothes, etc? What a douche. And you don't treat working people like that. It's like that scene in Last Holiday where Queen Latifah goes off on her boss's secretary for being so horrible to her masseuse. Someone needs to call this jerk out on his bull crap. If I were anyone on this guy's staff, I'd make his name public, run it through the mud, then quit in the middle of something so he'd have to clean up everything on his own, and make sure no one ever served him again. Not one domestic service would cater to that idiot if I had my way.
You don't treat all people this way no matter who they are or what service they are performing for you. Sometimes I order crazy at a restaurant because I have crazy stomach issues, but I always tip 20% when I'm that specific. This guy is a jerk and needs to be punched in the face.
