Hosni Mubarak, the Egyptian president overthrown in 2011, is expected to be released from jail in the next 48 hours after a prosecutor cleared him in a corruption case, his lawyer Fareed El Deeb told Reuters on Monday.
El Deeb spoke to reporters after judicial authorities ordered that Mubarak be released in one of the corruption cases alleged against him.
The only legal grounds for Mubarak's continued detention rest on another corruption case which will be cleared up later this week, Deeb told Reuters.
"All we have left is a simple administrative procedure that should take no more than 48 hours. He should be freed by the end of the week," Mubarak's lawyer added.

(31,706 posts)...and in poor health, I doubt he'll be doing much running for anything...or walking for that matter. Sounds like he'll quietly slip away, both politically and physically. I'm curious how this will affect those in the streets...both sides detest Mubarak and I wonder if his release will amp up tensions even further. Under the current circumstances another election would be a bloodbath...but one will need to be called, the status quo will just fester more violence...
