The DUzy Awards for February 24th, 2012

[center][big][big][big]WELCOME to the DUZY AWARDS![/big][/big][/big][/center]

Your weekly edition of the funniest photoshops, one-liners, and Santorum-snark in the liberal blog-o-sphere!

This week’s improvement: I switched over to organic, free-range nouns from a farm in Vermont. Let me know if the extra cost is worth it.

[big] I don't know if "Jump The Shark" is the right term, but this "news story" is beyond "over-the-top"[/big]
The story tells of Obama dropping in to a Chinese restaurant in San Francisco's China Town. He had a To Go order, went in, greeted customers, picked up his two bags of food, paid cash, and left.

That was the start, middle, and end of the essential story.

But Wait!

There's More!!!!

It seems this particular restaurant has shark fin soup on the menu. It seems someone was offended that Obama would frequent such an establishment. Shame on him, the story implies. How dare he - how DARE he - patronize such an ecologically irresponsible place. Why does Obama hate sharks? What shall we tell the BABY sharks????? OH NOES!!1!!!!

Read the story at this link to the AFP article on Yahoo News. Whether you love Obama, like him, dislike him, or can't stand him, you can still appreciate the unbridled stupidity of the article.

Before you follow the link, drop some spare change into the empty carry out container. We're taking up a collection to buy these morons a few clues.

http://news.yahoo.com/obama-hot-water-over-shark-fin-soup-224053506.html

Yes, sharks are under pressure. Yes, there are problems. Yes, the practice should be banned. The issue here is not the practice of shark finning. That is for another thread. The issue here is the attempt to tie that to Obama's ordering Chinese food by the absolutely most tenuous of connections.

[big] Santorum would be a courageous and brilliant GE opponent, we should fear him.[/big]
For the Right Wing Lurkers;

(You can quote at your little buddy sites)

We liberals should fear Santorum and not be making fun of him. He is a clear headed man with strong morals and principles. He will excite the 'silent' majority of the country and make it really really really really hard for us to bring our atheistic communalistic policies to fruition. We should hope that the Republicans pick anyone but Santorum.

[big] PHOTOS: HEY! My Jack In The Box BLT Bacon Cheeseburger didn't look that way in the AD.[/big]
Reality Check: BLT Cheeseburger at Jack in the Box

Posted by Adam Lindsley, February 16, 2012 at 3:45 PM

http://aht.seriouseats.com/archives/2012/02/reality-check-blt-cheeseburger-at-jack-in-the-box.html

Fast-food establishments are always looking for ways to repurpose items in their arsenal of preformed menu components into something they can market as brand new. As part of the company's "Love Bacon? Marry It." advertising campaign, Jack in the Box recently released the BLT Bacon Cheeseburger in conjunction with its thoroughly heinous Bacon Shake. The result? Exactly what you would expect a burger from Jack in the Box to taste like.

As I said, there's nothing new whatsoever about Jack in the Box's BLT Cheeseburger, as it is barely different from the chain's Jumbo Jack with Cheese. It just swaps out the Jumbo Jack's ketchup and onions for hickory-smoked bacon, which of course you can already add to any sandwich. Everything else is the same: one beef patty, shredded iceberg lettuce, two slices of tomato, two slices of (unmelted) American cheese, and mayo-onion sauce.

Unlike the aforementioned bacon shake, the BLT Cheeseburger is at least edible (by no means anything for Jack in the Box to brag about). That doesn't make it something to recommend. Both the patty and the sesame bun on the burger we ordered were incredibly dry, with the thick breadiness of the two halves of the bun disproportionate to the total mass of the items held between them.

As you might expect, the burger is also very, very salty, so have a beverage close at hand. In terms of what hits the palate, the saltiness and smokiness of the bacon come through strongest, followed by the salt on the beef patty and the salt in the mayo-onion sauce. The wan tomato and lettuce may as well not even be there, as they're devoid of flavor and form a sort of green, red, and white mush between the top bun and the first slice of cheese.

[big] What Constitutes Stalking on DU?[/big]
In my time on DU, I've seen many people say that they're being stalked on DU. On both DU2, and DU3, I've seen such statements. Occasionally, I've seen posts deleted or hidden because of it. But, it's unclear what constitutes stalking here, or anywhere on the internet, for that matter. It seems like a worthwhile topic to discuss in H&M, as an attempt to clarify what that word means and doesn't mean. Here are some of the things I think do and don't qualify as stalking:

Not Stalking

Posts in threads begun by a DUer that disagree with the DUer's position. This doesn't qualify as stalking, even if those posts are frequent and appear in many threads. DU is a discussion forum, and in popular forums here, it's common for people to read many of the threads posted in this forum. It's also common to disagree with the same people over and over again. Not stalking.

Using sarcasm to disagree with a poster on DU. Sarcasm, pointing out irony, and even what may seem like snarky posts doesn't qualify as stalking. All three are common rhetorical methods for stating disagreement. Not stalking.

Referring to things posted by a DUer in other DU threads. Many DUers post frequently on the site. Remembering what was said at an earlier time on DU by a frequent poster is not at all unusual for other active DUers. If you write something in one thread that contradicts something you wrote in a different thread, you can expect it to be remembered and mentioned if you are a frequent DU poster. Sometimes people will remember many things you have said in the past. Not stalking.

Comments about the tone and accuracy of a DUers posts. Our writing reflects our thinking. The way something is written is a valid thing to criticize. Not stalking.

Possible or Obvious Stalking

Seeking out and bringing up posts from the distant past in other places on the Internet not mentioned by the DUer. If a DUer doesn't make a point of discussing activities at other places on the Internet, bringing those activities up in a thread suggests that the person bringing them up has been searching around for those activities. In many cases, this can be seen as stalking. If the DUer has mentioned those other places, then it's natural to go see what was said there. In that case, it's probably not stalking.

Revealing personal information about a DUer that is not revealed in a profile or through common mention in the DUer's posts. Many DUers try to maintain some degree of anonymity on DU. If they don't reveal information about themselves in their posts or in their profiles, then knowing that information is pretty clear evidence that the person revealing it has been out hunting for it.

Making irrelevant comments about a DUer's personal attributes in a thread. Again, if the subject of the thread is not about the personal attributes of the poster, then negative comments about those personal attributes are evidence of some personal issue with that DUer. If those attributes are not common knowledge, then such comments may well be evidence of stalking behavior. If only such comments about personal attributes are made, without any attempt to discuss the topic of the thread, it's likely that the person making them came to the thread only to make those negative comments.

Any attempt to contact a DUer or real life associates of the DUer in a negative way. This is clearly stalking behavior. Examples might include making negative posts on a DUer's Facebook page, contacting the DUer via email, telephone, or following a DUer to another site to post negative comments. Attempts to contact a DUer's employer, acquaintances, or other real life associates with negative information about the DUer is clearly stalking.

Calling out a DUer in a negative way in threads where the DUer is not active. This is malicious behavior. It used to be forbidden on DU, but sometimes is allowed by DU3 juries. It's wrong and may indicate some form of stalking behavior.

Negatively referring to a DUer on another website, where that DUer is not a member. This is also malicious behavior and evidence of stalking. Making negative comments about a DUer on a website where that DUer is not a member and cannot mount a defense is never acceptable. Talking behind people's backs is simply very bad form. If you have an issue with another DUer, raise it where that DUer can respond.

Those are some of my thoughts about stalking and DU. I probably left out some, so if you have others or disagree with what I've posted, let's discuss stalking in this thread.

[big] Here is what I don't understand about dog owners[/big]
I live in an affluent area. Just to keep it real, I rent (and get a deal). But the people with the big bucks live on the other side of town. What I have noticed is that some of them seem trashier than the ones without the mansions and so much space between houses. Like I will come home at 9 PM and on the ritzy part of town I have heard dogs barking at that hour.

First of all, WHY have a dog that barks incessantly? Doesn't it bother the OWNER of the dog, also? And wouldn't you feel like an A-one asshat to let your dog bark at night when people are trying to relax? Especially at that hour. Some people go to sleep earlier than others but at the very least we all want to wind down at night and not have to hear a dog constantly barking.

If Santorum pulls ahead you will hear a lot less barking.

However if Romney gets the nomination you will need to double your Melatonin until the election is over.

I have tried to explain it to my dog but he still doesn't get the Electoral College.

[big] A Construction Company in Japan Plans to have a Working Space Elevator by 2050.[/big]
Here, we will be lucky build a new Applebee's.
______________

It may be possible to travel to space in an elevator as early as 2050, a major construction company has announced.

Obayashi Corp., headquartered in Tokyo, on Monday unveiled a project to build a gigantic elevator that would transport passengers to a station 36,000 kilometers above the Earth.

For the envisaged project, the company would utilize carbon nanotubes, which are 20 times stronger than steel, to produce cables for the space elevator.

The idea of space elevators has been described in several science-fiction novels. Obayashi, however, believes it is possible to construct one in the real world thanks to carbon nanotubes, which were invented in the 1990s, the company said.

Not the big "stodgy science was wrong" event some claimed.

http://www.physorg.com/news/2012-02-faster-neutrinos-faulty-wiring.html

Ever since the news came out on September 22 of last year that a team of researchers in Italy had clocked neutrinos traveling faster than the speed of light, the physics world has been resounding with the potential implications of such a discovery — that is, if it were true. The speed of light has been a key component of the standard model of physics for over a century, an Einstein-established limit that particles (even tricky neutrinos) weren’t supposed to be able to break, not even a little.

Now, according to a breaking news article by Edwin Cartlidge on AAAS’ ScienceInsider, the neutrinos may be cleared of any speed violations.

[big] How Heinrich Rudolf Hertz revealed the invisible world (CS Monitor)[/big]
Mega happy birthday Herr Hertz ~ pinto

How Heinrich Rudolf Hertz revealed the invisible world

Heinrich Rudolf Hertz, the man behind today's Google doodle, found what eyes could not see. Today would have been Heinrich Hertz's 155th birthday.

By Chris Gaylord / February 22, 2012

Our story starts in 1873, when a Scottish physicist named James Maxwell tried to convince people that light, electricity, and magnetism were all versions of the same phenomenon. It was a weird idea at the time. How could the invisible power of magnets go hand-in-hand with the radiant glow of candlelight? They're obviously different to the human eye, but actually quite similar in hidden ways.

Maxwell was the first to figure out that light moves like a wave, just as magnetism and electricity move through the "electromagnetic field." This was a huge breakthrough – it made sense of the invisible world in the same way that Isaac Newton and his falling apple unified the visible world. Maxwell's math checked out, yet he couldn't prove that his ideas were true. He challenged other scientists to come up with experiments that could demonstrate this invisible science to the naked eye.

A decade later, Hertz found a way.

In his lab, the German scientist rigged up two tiny brass spheres, placed very close to one another. When he electrified them, sparks leaped from one ball to the other. If Maxwell was correct, these sparks should send invisible waves radiating through the air. To test the theory, he needed to build a receiver. This second instrument consisted of a curved wire that almost made a full circle, except for a tiny gap at the top. He placed the transmitter and the receiver several yards apart and made sure that nothing connected the two. Sure enough, when sparks shot through the transmitter, invisible waves traveled through the air, lighting up new sparks on the receiver.

[big] RUSH: “Santorum is getting creamed."[/big]
Rush Limbaugh said he “cringed” when Rick Santorum blurted out during Wednesday night’s Republican debate that “politics is a team sport” to explain his voting record – a line that his opponents have quickly seized on to paint the GOP candidate as a clear-cut Washington insider.

“Santorum is getting creamed. I cringed when I heard him say this. Santorum is getting creamed for the team player comment,” Limbaugh said on his radio show Thursday. “I heard it, I looked at my wife]Kathryn, and I said, ‘There’s going to be hell to pay for that one,’ because I knew that Santorum opponents, both from the left and right, were going to harp on it.”

[big] Virginia Poised To Enact ‘State-Sponsored Rape’ Law[/big]
Earlier this month, a bill requiring women to receive an ultrasound before they can receive an abortion passed the Virginia senate, and it recently cleared a state house committee with an overwhelming majority. As Dahlia Lithwick explains, the effect of this bill would be to force most women to undergo a stunningly invasive procedure for no medical reason whatsoever. “Because the great majority of abortions occur during the first 12 weeks, that means most women will be forced to have a transvaginal procedure, in which a probe is inserted into the vagina, and then moved around until an ultrasound image is produced.”

In case Lithwick’s description doesn’t completely drive home what this means, here is a depiction of the procedure that women would be forced to endure under the Virginia bill:

"The feminist can't get along with each other"

I can't believe that Skinner's thread about Jeff W's e-mail didn't make it to the final round because of some of the responses, but maybe it's just as well.
Jeff W would probably want partial credit, even though he didn't want to discuss politics with us.
