For most Americans, cars are a way to get around. For most of Detroit, they're a way of life.
Generations of autoworkers grew up trusting that if we worked hard and played by the rules, we would be able to live the American dream. Not long ago, that way of life almost ended.
I have been stunned at the recent debate about what really happened here in 2009. Choices have been scrutinized, other paths imagined, and the road we took to get to this point has been studied from every conceivable angle.
That's all fair game. But rewriting facts and denying history are not. snip
I don't have to tell you that cars made Detroit. But no matter what anyone tells you, it's thanks to President Obama that Detroit is still making cars.
Bob King is president of the UAW.

King is a member of the NAACP, the Democratic Party, and the Coalition of Labor Union Women. He has also served as a national vice president of the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
King is also a committed human rights activist. He led a group of union officials to El Salvador in 1989 to monitor elections there, and he has participated in protests at the School of the Americas, a United States Department of Defense facility at Fort Benning near Columbus, Georgia, which many accuse of training Latin American soldiers and officers in techniques later used to commit human rights violations

(61,694 posts)2. Anytime the GOP is going to talk
about the GM bailout, Steven Rattner should be brought in to set the record straight. He headed up the deal and knows precisely what they did to make it work.
I love seeing him on Morning Joe. He understands the macroeconomics better than anyone they've had on the program, IMO.
