Yesterday Rick Santorum said something rather profound in a speech in Detroit and as soon as I saw Fox playing it, I knew I had to grab the whole thing.

Contrary to the class warfare that the president has been preaching, Rick Santorum said that he hopes there will always be income inequality:



This is great. He’s saying that he wants you to control your destiny, not some government bureaucrat. It’s all about liberty, which is all about choice, your choice. If you want to work really hard and better yourself, then by all means you should be able to pursue that. But if you are content with little, you shouldn’t be told by some bureaucrat that you don’t have enough.

It’s about equality of opportunity. Period.

... mixed with Social Darwinism... that those people have always used to explain greed.

Curious it's from a Catholic.. they don't believe in predestination.

Protestants who believe that shit believe that working hard could produce prosperity, and prosperity was an indication that God was with you; in Calvin's view, one of the elect.

Of course, their view of "working hard" had more to do with manipulating markets rather than all that sweating and grunting.

I'm severely ashamed that this man is a Catholic as were my ancestors for many generations. It's because of idiots like Santorum that I left the church. They are far more common than most would imagine. I'm surrounded by them in my tiny corner of Northern Maine.

BUT, we part company is when we get into

(1) how little in the way of basement support is too little for those who are simply unable to single-mindedly climb the income ladder, as is required of those who actually "succeed;"

(2) how much help in terms of creating a level playing field of opportunity (education, loans, grants) should be given to those with ability but not means as they struggle to progress; and

(3) how much privilege and protection is too much for those who start with more, achieve it unscrupulously, and/or look for ways to avoid returning their contribution (full, fair share of taxes) to the society that spawned and supported them.

be it positive or negative PR.

These guys are able to throw their ideas of reputation to the wind when the media environment thrives on, and promotes and supports public spectacles as relevant.

The Repeligans can capitalize on statements that are grossly irrelevant to what we feel are essential issues and the corporate media can utilize them to both push agendas and distract attention and energy from what is really going on and what we need.

They score on attention and they are getting boatloads of it. What they actually say seems to be secondary.
