UK police say Snowden reporter's partner carried 'injurious' data
LONDON | Thu Aug 22, 2013 8:22am EDT
(Reuters) - The partner of a reporter who wrote about the leaks by Edward Snowden was carrying sensitive material that could have been dangerous for the public when he was detained at a London airport, a British police lawyer said on Thursday.
David Miranda, partner of U.S. journalist Glenn Greenwald, was questioned for nine hours on Sunday at London's Heathrow Airport before being released without charge, prompting calls for an explanation of why anti-terrorism powers were used to detain the Brazilian citizen.
Miranda, who was in transit from Berlin to Rio de Janeiro, was released without charge minus his laptop, phone and memory sticks. His lawyer has requested an injunction to prevent the authorities from examining any data seized from Miranda.
At a hearing at London's High Court, police lawyer Jonathan Laidlaw said officers were still examining tens of thousands of pages of digital material from Miranda.

Another symptom of an Authoritarian State is that the officials lie without even bothering to be plausible.

The court ruled the authorities must not inspect the data nor distribute it domestically or to any foreign government or agency unless it is for the purpose of ensuring the protection national security or for investigating whether Miranda is himself involved in the commission, instigation or preparation of an act of terrorism.
But the ruling also meant that data cannot be used for the purposes of criminal investigation although the court had previously heard that the Met had launched a criminal investigation after analysing the seized data.

The Home Office said it was "pleased" that a High Court ruling allows police to examine material seized from David Miranda at Heathrow:
Home Office statement
We are pleased the court has agreed that the police can examine the material as part of their criminal investigation insofar as it falls within the purposes of the original Schedule 7 examination and in order to protect national security.
It would be inappropriate for us to comment further on ongoing legal proceedings.
