It is not power that corrupts but fear. Fear of losing power corrupts those who wield it Aung San Suu Kyi: Freedom from Fear
Recent events in the UK have been disturbing for believers and supporters of civil liberties. In many ways it feels as though our civil liberties are under a greater, more sustained attack than at any time since the Blair inspired near-paranoia that led to ideas such as the ID card database, the Interception Modernisation Programme (the predecessor of the Snoopers Charter) and 42 day detention amongst other hideously illiberal measures. What is perhaps more dangerous is that todays attacks are in some ways more insidious, more seemingly disconnected, more apparently reasonable when considered individually and hence more likely to gain public support even by those who consider themselves to be very much supporters of human rights. Make no mistake about it, though: they are connected, and inspired by the same sense of fear that inspired Blair, Straw, Blunkett et al. Theyre inspired by the same fear that have enveloped authoritarians for centuries: a fear of losing control.
1) Fear of a strong, independent, determined press
An independent press is the scourge of the authoritarian and authoritarians know it all too well. The powerful have never liked a free press from the pamphleteers of the 18th century to Tygodnik Solidarność in Communist Poland, an independent, brave and determined press has been crucial to the resistance to oppression. Thats why, regardless of the legality or otherwise of their actions, the Governments first supervising the smashing of the Guardians laptops and then detaining David Miranda should be viewed very seriously indeed. Its an attempt to stifle, to cow, to intimidate and to control the press. Thats serious. Very serious indeed.
2) Fear that people will learn what theyre doing
Authoritarians everywhere want their own actions, their own methods, their own systems to remain secret. they dont want the ordinary people to know what theyre doing partly because when people know what theyre doing, they generally object, partly because the authoritarians know that what theyre doing is in many ways wrong, partly because if people know whats going on they can take measures against it. Make no bones about it, the Snowden revelations matter it matters that we know about the level of surveillance that the authorities are performing, and how much theyre lying about it.

Their reaction to Occupy was an example of their determination to terrorize the public into accepting their control.

(3,871 posts)This book was written in 2006, halfway through George W. Bushs second term as president. A great deal was wrong with America then, and I thought the research on authoritarian personalities could explain a lot of it. Since then a new administration has been elected, and although it has had to deal with a very serious economic crisis brought on by others, it is taking steps to correct some of what is wrong.
However, the forces that largely caused the problems have remained on the scene, and are more active today than ever before. As I try to show in the Comment on the Tea Party Movement (link to the left), the research findings in this book apply at least as strongly to America today as they did four years ago. Indeed, the events of 2009 and 2010 have confirmed conclusion after conclusion in The Authoritarians. I wrote in 2006 that the authoritarians in America were not going to go away if they lost the 2008 election, that they would be infuriated if a new president tried to carry out his mandate. That has certainly been the case.
If you check the hit counter on this page, youll see that this site has been visited nearly 300,000 times so far. The feedback Ive gotten from those who have read The Authoritarians enables me to give you the major reason why you might want to do so too. It ties things together for me, people have said, You can see how so many things all fit together. It explains the things about conservatives that didnt make any sense to me, others have commented. And the one that always brings a smile to my face, Now at last I understand my brother-in-law (or grandmother, uncle, woman in my car pool, Congressman, etc.).

Not only have the Republican authoritarians not gone away, but also heretofore unknown Democratic authoritarians have revealed themselves.

Please.
Do I have to start posting Venn diagrams to illustrate why this talking point is nothing but toxic nonsense?

(45,984 posts)Are you implying that anyone here who doesn't want the government snooping through our phone records and e-mail must be supporting Ron or Rand Paul?
Since the argument that we're racists fell flat on its face, you guys have come up with this one and it isn't one bit better. Please, stop making asses of yourselves and tell your boss, whoever he is, to give you guys a talking point more likely to resonate with a website full of people who voted for Obama twice. Your as endearing as Rahm Emanuel, who spent his time as WH Chief of Staff calling us retards (which is ridiculous) and professional leftists (which many here took as a compliment).

(14,459 posts)The people doing this are afraid that we'll find out...that they aren't the best and brightest. Not the smartest and most talented. Not the most moral and upright. Not the shining stars of our world.
They are simply the ones who will do anything to win.
