because of this new era we are in.
Like when the world changed from an agrarian economy to the industrial age. We are now in the cyber era(robots) where productivity outstrips need for labor, thus less than 1/2 the schools are needed.
Schools need to become glorified daycare centers, wilderness camps, art and craft centers. We also need massive make work projects. There will not be enough jobs for more than 1/2 the population, and those jobs will require only the top 5% of science and engineering.
So solving the problem will be to begin by identifying the actual problem.

(10,103 posts)learning will kickstart both the economy and human capital. That will likely fix the problem on its own; robots are high on power and resource consumption.

(20,600 posts)50% of universities closed, and the rest converted to day care centers and wilderness camps, that sounds easy enough.

(31,965 posts)If only because of its endowment. But many colleges and universities will disappear in the next few years because of on-line education. Many people now go to college just because they don't know what else to do. After getting a four year degree in six years they go on to grad school for the same reason.

Anyone know?

(31,965 posts)But I have no respect for the current college experience. Mainly due to rampant grade inflation and 'cool' courses that have no value after you graduate.

(3,186 posts)I feel sorry for the parents of children not 'launched' yet. Things seem so uncertain these days. Wondering if their children will be served a poor quality education after years of savings are dumped into it, would just add to the burden of worry. Ugh.

(45,470 posts)Even if half the Universities in this country disappeared tomorrow, Princeton would still be here.
Getting an education isn't about job training. While there are many problems with the cost of getting an education, going to college is still a good* option.
* I didn't say "only option."

(16,423 posts)In case it's not:
The industrial era began when machinization allowed for mass-production. Machine-assisted labor replaced manual labor as the main driving-force of the economy.
We certainly live at the onset of a cyber-era, but even the First-World-countries are far removed from that new communication-technology becoming a major economic factor.

(12,296 posts)... not only did (Bush Budget Director, IN GOP Governor, now Purdue President) Mitch Daniels want to get rid of Howard Zinn's books, he wanted to mandate teaching of the idiot William Bennett's America-uber-alles mythology.
Say buh bye to critical thinking, liberals studies and pretty much most meaningful discourse if the "reformers" have their way.
