Obama visits 'Women's Rights' park during bus tour

BY JULIE PACE
AP White House Correspondent

SENECA FALLS, N.Y. — President Barack Obama is observing Women's Equality Day a few days early.

He made an unannounced stop Thursday at the Women's Rights National Historical Park Visitors Center to present it with a copy of the first bill he ever signed into law — the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009.

Obama passed through Seneca Falls en route to Syracuse, N.Y., as part of a bus tour promoting new higher education proposals.

In making the presentation at the visitors center, Obama said he hoped his gift would be a "modest" contribution to the museum. He said the bill's purpose — to make sure women get equal pay for equal work — is an idea that "the vast majority of Americans believe in."

What is Women’s Equality Day?

At the behest of Rep. Bella Abzug (D-NY), in 1971 the U.S. Congress designated August 26 as “Women’s Equality Day.”

The date was selected to commemorate the 1920 passage of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, granting women the right to vote. This was the culmination of a massive, peaceful civil rights movement by women that had its formal beginnings in 1848 at the world’s first women’s rights convention, in Seneca Falls, New York.

The observance of Women’s Equality Day not only commemorates the passage of the 19th Amendment, but also calls attention to women’s continuing efforts toward full equality. Workplaces, libraries, organizations, and public facilities now participate with Women’s Equality Day programs, displays, video showings, or other activities.

Joint Resolution of Congress, 1971
Designating August 26 of each year as Women’s Equality Day

My sis is going down to greet the bus and promised to take pics.

He just finished his speech at Henninger HS and, rumor has it, he's going to a famous Syracuse BBQ for dinner. After that, he's coming here to crash at the Holiday Inn (1900 feet away from my house - yes, I measured it on Google Earth ).

Things have been a bit... surreal here in town. The last time a sitting POTUS was here was HST during his Whistlestop tour in 1948. Tomorrow, he's going to the Seward Mansion and the Harriet Tubman House before making his way to Binghamton.

The last 2 weeks for me have been a killer! So put your feet up for awhile, then some sleep.

Wow, 65 years since you have had a sitting POTUS visit! Kudos to you and Syracuse.

And bless his heart, he's staying at the Holiday Inn!

If your sis gets some pictures, I would love to see you post them.

Get some rest Cooley Hurd~
