Man killed by girlfriend identified, deputies say
Darren William Haverty, 39, was a Holopaw resident originally from Ireland, according to Twis Lizasuain, a spokeswoman for the Osceola County Sheriff's Office.
Wendy Hanks, 33, is accused of killing Haverty on Tuesday. She is being held in the Osceola County Jail without bond on a first-degree-murder charge.
Hanks told investigators Tuesday that she shot her boyfriend after being beaten and threatened with a knife while camping in eastern Osceola County.
But autopsy results and evidence found at the shooting scene conflicted with her account of what happened, Lizasuain wrote Wednesday in announcing the arrest.

(113,232 posts)knowing. it could be the police simply not believing a woman who says she was abused, or she could be lying. the article is pretty much a waste.

(6,342 posts)Obviously lots of details not known yet. But it seems like its more than just cops not believing her.
Cases like this usually end up in front of a jury.

(62,269 posts)They seem to have found something at the scene that disputes her original testimony. Maybe the shooting didn't go down the way she claimed. So they are saying she's lying.
Frankly I think it's overzealous cops trying to find something where there isn't something. When under stress being interviewed by police you can get mixed up so easily it's a joke. So many people have gone to jail under those circumstances. It's always best to get a lawyer. She should've said "I will tell you everything that happened but I want a lawyer first. I am claiming self-defense due to assault. Other than that I cannot elaborate."

(6,342 posts)You can be telling the truth, but you have no idea how someone else is interpreting it. And you have no idea what crime you could be admitting to. You can say something, the cop writes it down in his report the wrong interpretation of what you said. Many months later in a trial, the cop is called to testify after studying his notes. Guess what, he's going to tell the jury the wrong interpretation. Then you claim you never said that. So now it's your word against a police officer. Who's the jury going to believe?
Bullshit like that has sent people to jail.
When in a situation like this, you say you are exercising your 5th amendment rights to remain silent. And that you want your lawyer. And that's it. If they are going to arrest you, chances are they were going to do so even if you answered their questions.
It's not your responsibility to help the police convict you. You have the right to not answer any questions.

(62,269 posts)Not saying this woman is innocent, mind you, but it seems fishy that she fully cooperated and wound up getting arrested.

(13,985 posts)Cops are not there to help get the truth out, they're there to get enough statements to be able to press charges.
She should have known better.

(62,269 posts)You really need to be educated on this beforehand. If you're ever at the other end of a police questioning session you'd know why. If you don't know, or aren't informed, you're fucked. The police will fuck you over, innocent or not.

(13,985 posts)Perheps there should be some sort of mass awareness camapaign, since most are unaware that cops are not your friends.
Like you said, guilty or not.

(113,232 posts)In court on Thursday, Hanks was held in a secure cage as she was charged and denied bond. County officials said the cages are reserved for potentially dangerous inmates.
. . . .
I wonder how many men who have murdered their wives or girlfriends are put in that cage.
