(17 posts)My husband and I take in rescue dogs because we have a large backyard. They were once sad, but now they're as happy
as puppies. I can't tell you how this warms our hearts.

(1,113 posts)was the dog of the year for 2012 at the ASPCA ceremony. That was Eldad Hagar who rescued her. Eldad it a true knight in shining armor for animals in need of rescue. Eldad's group is Hope for Paws. It's worth checking them out. I was sobbing for hours the first 9 or 10 times I've watched the video. It was a miracle that she was found and rescued.

(65,227 posts)watching Hope for Paws rescue videos on YouTube.
That organization has become one of the ones I regularly donate to. The other two are our local Humane Society and a cat rescue group in another city that I adopted one of my cats from almost 9 years ago.
Hope for Paws is amazing. I hope more people will donate to them after watching this video!

(34 posts)I teach high school in South LA and rescue animals there but it has literally bankrupted me. Many animals have simply crossed my path in the last 11 years of my teaching. My first was an Australian Shepherd who I took to the South LA shelter and she was shaking when I left her there. Now I wish I had called a rescue group instead.
The second was when I was driving to school in the morning. I saw a flash of brown and tan at the Manchester exit in the plants on the greenbelt between the freeway and the side street. It was raining hard. I walked up the area and it was a Rottweiler happy to see me. He couldn't walk on one leg. He got in my car with assistance. I had to call the shelter because I had a field trip that day. When I got back and called the shelter, they had euthanized him. I was furious at them and slammed down the phone. I know better now. The South LA shelter has improved greatly but I still avoid it in many situations and leave my number as a last call.
The next was a schnauzer terrier mix who exhausted, was walking up the sidewalk on 76th street. I had gotten out of school late that day. It was about 100 degrees in August at our year round school. One of my students was nearby and picked up the dog and put him in my car. Baby Bear has been with me ever since and is sitting beside me
A few months later I found a white shepherd smeared with feces on his side. I had to take him to the shelter. He found a home.
There were countless more, some of whom I took to the Pasadena shelter. One a husky, was adopted out of the South LA shelter and a Doberman lying in the middle of the street had a chip, and his owner finally came and got him after the 3rd call by LA Animal Services.
My last two rescues were two small dogs who ran across Manchester into the Popeye's parking lot. I was able to coax them into my car. No tags, no chips, no collars. Had them spayed. One had medical issues.
I ended up on the financial brink even with low cost vets and spays and neuters and am digging myself out now. I also have a shepherd I rescued from a chop shop in the Valley.
I think some of us who are in South LA should pool our resources and form a non-profit.
Iwillnevergiveup
(9,298 posts)and welcome to DU where you'll find loads of like-minded animal lovers.
Having taught on the south side of L.A. myself, I can totally relate to your rescue stories. A friend and I rescued 3 dogs within a few weeks' time, and she kept them all. L.A. Animal Services is totally overwhelmed, and Pasadena Humane IS the best bet. They're greatly expanding the facility - should be done in a couple months.
Hats off to animal rescuers everywhere and a great big BOOOOO to backyard breeders.
kylie5432
(34 posts)Wow that is great to know that Pasadena is expanding their great facility. I used to feel a bit guilty lying to them about where I found the dogs but I really had no other choice. I would leave a donation though.

(38,303 posts)Three is what our city allows without special permit.
The amazing thing about dogs is they know. You are their hero.
Our dogs radiate joy when they sleep on the bed.
Current #1 dog was picked up from a truck stop. Twelve years past but the sound of a diesel engine still sets off her PTSD.
#2 dog was feral, competing for our "worst dog ever" title with the Catahoula we once adopted, or the worst-dog-in-the-world coyote-collie-hybrid my sister once brought home when we were kids. But this dog loves my wife and is tolerant of humans. Hell on gophers, she plucks them out of their holes and eats them whole. Don't even look at her food. (We feed her last to enforce our own hierarchy. We are the boss.)
#3 dog, was kept chained five years in a backyard 24/7. His teeth are worn from chewing on his chain. I don't think he'd ever been inside a house before we brought him home.
He first looked at our stairs like and it took a few days watching the other dogs before he came upstairs on his own. He loves to cuddle. If he was a cat on the bed he'd be purring. Feral dog loves him, they can roughhouse for hours. He pees on the vacuum cleaner and drinks out of the toilet. I hope he gets past that.

We just adopted a half-starved rescue kitty Tuesday - he purrs so loud when we feed him, that it's hard for him to eat!

(15,021 posts)Even though I know it's a happy ending I just couldn't watch because of the beginning and the anger sadness I knew would come from seeing how Fiona was literally tossed into the trash and how much she was suffering; I just couldn't watch that.
I finally broke down and watched it last night and yeah, I cried like a baby through the video, from anger at the beginning to happiness at the end.
What wonderful people all of them are for rescuing Fiona and giving her a happy life. What wonderful people. And I love you, Fiona.
